    Default Drive By Truckers

Does anyone know anything about this band? They're opening for the Black Crowes on their summer tour and I've heard good word of mouth on them. Can someone recommend any of their CDs?

"Southern Rock Opera" is a good one...a double disc about Skynyrd. Great band and Robert Randolph is f'in awesome as well. this is going to be a killer show.

Agreed, you can start w/Southern Rock Opera. The Dirty South is also good. The newest one, A Blessing and a Curse, is slightly more commercial. Personally, I like Pizza Deliverance a lot, but others don't. It is a matter of tastes I guess. I like the grit and wit of the DTB.

DBT kicks major ass. Most of their songs tell a story and they are usually real good ones. Southern Rock Opera is great. There is a song called Let There Be Rock that is all about how many other bands this dude saw except for the original Lynyrd Skynyrd line-up, including AC/DC with Bon Scott singing Let There Be Rock.

My favorite is The Dirty South, theres one song dedicated to Carl Perkins and how he won the Cadillac from Sam Phillips for Blue Suede Shoes. Also has a lot of "rockin" songs. If you can find it get whatever album with My Sweet Annette, its also a great song.

Their newest cd is kind of different, usually there's a rockin song somewhere, but not on this cd, but its still good.

That would be Decoration Day, also a fine CD.

    Who do they sound like?

I kinda get the impression that DBT is in the same vein as Uncle Tupelo, Govt Mule, Son Volt, and to a lesser degree, the Black Crowes. Is this the correct impression or am I way off base?

Great band! I would recommend Decoration Day as a good starter album. Them with the Crowes and Robert Randolph may be the best tour of the summer. I am jealous of anyone who gets to see them.

The new one is called "Blessing and a Curse", oddly enough I'm listening to it right now. I think Southern Rock Opera is probably my favorite. I kinda like concept albums.

I picked up "Southern Rock Opera". Quite frankly the songs are weak, they are more like sketches than actual, well thought out songs.

The lyrical ideas, however are fucking brilliant. Having lived through much of the same shit at the same time these guys did ( coming into adulthood in the South in the late seventie, early eighties) I can truly relate.

Besides, they mention The Replacement's "Here Comes A Regular" in the liner notes, which is a nice touch...probably the best song about bar culture and it's inherant loneliness ever written.

I'd imagine they are terrific live.
