Oh Noooo!! There's a gorilla loose in the forums!!! J/K... Welcome to VHLinks. I haven't read the book. I thought about buying the Encyclopaedia.
Homer: No one snuggles with Max Power. Just strap on and feel the Gs!

American Coast Guard: Back off Canadians we got them.
Canadian Coast Guard: You back off hosers, they are in Canadian waters, eh.
American Coast Guard: Beat it you puck smacking maple suckers!
Canadian Coast Guard: Take a hike you Shatner stealing Mexico touchers!

Bart: Who the hell is this?
Jack Bauer: I’m Jack Bauer, who the hell is this?
Bart: Me, er… I’m Ahmed Adudi
Jack: Chloe, get me all you can on Ahmed Adudi… Does anyone there know Ahmed Adudi?
Chloe O’Brien: Ahmed Adudi; wealthy Saudi financier… Disappeared into Afghanistan in the late 90s…
    Jack: … Really?
Chloe (ironically): No Jack it’s a joke name, you’re being set up.
    Jack: DAMMIT!

I'm currently reading it. Have been for the last month. It basically tells you some things you already know, but gets very into detail after the discography about tone, Eddie's impact, etc. I'd recommend it

I think it spends too much time telling you stuff you already know (if you're a long time Van Halen fan).

There were definitely a couple of great chapters, but on the whole, I would give the book a thumbs down.

I thought there was some good info in it, but it was poorly written.

Also, comparisons between live & studio recordings to make a point about how much total time soloing appeared on various discs seemed absurd. Apples & oranges. The main candidates were Van Halen's debut vs Jimi Hendrix's Band Of Gypsys.

A quick edit to add that the tribute section was awesome, so it's worth picking up just for that...

“And what we have at our fingertips is arguably one of the greatest high tenor voices ever – that was in Michael Anthony. In our tiny little corner of the universe, that voice is as identifiable as the high voice in Earth, Wind & Fire, as identifiable as the high voice in the Beach Boys. Van Halen is an indelicate house blend of both – that’s intentionally. So I would always look forward to that reunion.” - David Lee Roth

The book was a fast, entertaining read. It was not professionally written...but I don't think the author ever claimed he was anything more than a big fan. I did already know most of the tidbits, but it was fun to read nonetheless.

Yeah the guy never said he was anything except a big VH fan. I liked the tributes to Edward. Nice to see him get the recognition he so deserves.

    Nothing wrong with that.

It was ok. Not the best. I wanted to throw something at the wall every time he ended a sentence in ", baby". I swear every third sentence ended with that, baby. I wish the writer would have had a ghost writer sit down with him and write it as he dictated it to him. It would have made it an easier read.

However if you are just a beginner and want to know about VH's impact, then it could be a very useful tool, baby.

Don't complain about it going into detail about stuff we already knew...check out the title "Van Halen 101." Yea, I agree that the writing was not great, but it was like hanging with a fan (I think we all are guilty of writing problems). I agree that the tribute section alone is worth the read.

I got it when it first came out. I did leard SOME things but like mentiioned by many here, there was a lot of info I already knew.

One thing to note though.... Look who we are saying "I already knew this and that." Most of us here at VHlinks ARE true VH freaks and have followed them, researched them and have dug up any little tidbid about them we could find. We all want NEW info on them and maybe expected to find it in this book. No, it wasn't well written but there is a lot of information in there for someone that wants to learn about the band and it's history.

    I enjoyed the book.

I definitely liked the part where the different guitar players got to say a little something about Eddie.

There were some parts that were repeated a little but overall I think it's a good read.

The only thing that really annoyed me was his writing style. WAY too casual. It was like sitting next to that annoying guy at a bar who's on his 8th beer and repeats himself for hours on end. But I WILL say, the overall format and facts in the book were pretty damn well researched and put together, it's just painful wading through the guy's wordiness to get to said facts...
