    Default what pickup would work

I was curious is it possible to get an older vh tone with an olp. I was looking to replace the stock pickups for a duncan 59b or jb. I guess im wondering what pickup would work well with a basswood body to get me somewhat in the ballpark. Any help would be appreciated.

Some people might tell you that its possible and other might say not to waste your time, but if you're looking to get *close*, I'd say you're going to do well with a Duncan JB or 59.

Remember too that you're comparing a simple pickup swap out with a tone created by a system of parts starting with EVH himself, the original Frankenstien guitar with the modified gibson pickup in it, the Marshall plexi amp, and a speaker cabinet with who-knows-what in it for speaker drivers.

One thing about the MM1: measure the distance from the pickup to the bridge and compare that to guitars which you believe have that EVH type sound. I think you'll find, as I did, that the pickup is MUCH too close to the bridge on the MM1. I got around this by using a pickup that was designated as a NECK pickup that had heavy bass response and a slight cut in the highs. This actually balanced out the tone for the MM1 bridge and gave it a smooth flat response. I can't say how close I came to the BROWN sound, again b/c there's tons of variables here, but I like where it ended up.

For early VH these'll all get you in the ballpark:

    Dimarzio VHPaf
    HighOrder Maximus
    Duncan Hybrid
    Duncan 78(big bucks)

Breadman is completely and totally correct.

And by VHPAF, he means Virtual HOT PAF....not just the standard VPAF.
