Default VH1's The Story of Metal

Nevermind Supergroup, this is the shit. Pt 1 has some awesome old ftg of
the likes of Zep, Kiss, AC/DC, Alice Cooper, etc., with cool commentary from
all the pertinent alumni. And they do a pretty accurate job with the history.
At the end of Pt 1 they illustrate the rise of punk and disco to the detriment
of metal and allude to the fact that something would need to come along
and save it ( ). I'm gonna go out on a limb here and bet there's
some killer VH ftg kicking off pt 2. Set your DVR to the "Fuck Yeah!" setting.

Yeah, but the implication was that something was definitely brewing, and
I don't see how MTV can be attributed with 'saving' metal, as it were. In
the beginning MTV was mostly about pop and new wave like Duran Duran
and the Psy Furs. Guess we'll find out tonite at 9.
But if they give it to Def Leppard or some shit, I'm throwing my TV in the
    dog blammed ocean.

After watching last night, I grabbed Kiss Alive, some Zepp and Sabbath for the day here at work. There's GOTTA be some mention of VH tonight, other than Jerry Cantrell saying that VH is not metal. Eddie inspired the whole metal/shred scene, along with Randy Rhoads.

I used to wonder why he was grinning all the time(Michael Ian Black talkin about EVH on VH1 I love the 80's) but then i realized the reason he's grinning is because he's Eddie F*#king Van Halen

Hmm, well I just assumed that it would be tonight, but I could be wrong. Figured since they ended at the disco era last night. VH should be on deck.

    Thanks for the heads up.

I agree w/ Cantrell that VH aren't really metal - not by today's standards.
But you have to put it in perspective. VH 1 WAS heavier than anything prior,
and that includes Black Sabbath. This was pre Metallica, pre Slayer, pre
whatever, and Ed's redefinition of heavy tone berthed ALL the new metal
to follow, even tho VH themselves paved a different road from there.

No way is Van Halen heavier than Black Sabbath - I never would've gotten into them if they were.

    I agree.

Not only did Tony's low tuning just scream heavy metal, but Ozzy's lyrics were just as dark.

Sabbath is way heavier than VH. Vol. 4 was my bible for a long while when I really started gettin into metal.

No way. I'm not talking about dark imagery and the devil's workshop,
Ed tuned low too, and there's no way any pre '78 BS is as heavy tonally
as almost anything off VH1. VH was way more tuneful sure, but the
gtr was also way more saturated/distorted. Iron Man vs. RWTD? Paranoid
vs. YRGM? Sweet Leaf vs. On Fire? C'mon, Early Sab sounds like country in
    comparison.

I noticed that the Kinks were credited as being the fore-fathers of metal, along with Black Sabbath...
I mentioned that in the Rock Hall dabate thread a while back , and was called all kinds of stupid names !
