Default FBI: Tip on Jimmy Hoffa prompts search

FBI: Tip on Jimmy Hoffa prompts search
Teamster boss last seen July 1975 at a Michigan restaurant

    Wednesday, May 17, 2006; Posted: 11:36 p.m. EDT (03:36 GMT)

(CNN) -- FBI agents and local police were searching a Michigan horse farm Wednesday for the remains of former Teamsters union leader Jimmy Hoffa after receiving a tip about his disappearance, the agency said.

The search was being conducted in Milford Township, 30 miles west of Detroit. Police from nearby Bloomfield Township were assisting the FBI agents.

A federal law enforcement official speaking on condition of anonymity said the search is for Hoffa's body.

Aerial footage from the scene showed at least 15 people outside a barn, most of whom were digging a rectangular hole. (Watch investigators dig for clues -- :53)

The agents and local police were looking for "evidence of criminal activity that may have occurred when the properties were under previous ownership," FBI agent Daniel Roberts said in a news release.

"The search warrant is based on a lead which is one of numerous leads received through the years following the disappearance of Mr. Hoffa on July 30, 1975," he said.

John and Deb Koskovich have lived on a neighboring property since 1985. When they saw the men digging next door, John Koskovich asked them what they were doing.

"They just said they were executing a search warrant," Deb Koskovich said.

John Koskovich said there have been reports over the years that Hoffa may be buried in the area, but "we just thought it was just another one of those crazy rumors," he said.

Hoffa was last seen at Machus Red Fox restaurant in Bloomfield Township. He was reportedly there to meet Detroit mob street enforcer Anthony Giacalone and New Jersey Teamsters official Anthony Provenzano.

Hoffa believed Giacalone had set up the meeting to help settle a feud between Hoffa and Provenzano, but Hoffa was the only one who showed up for the meeting, according to the FBI.

Giacalone and Provenzano later told the FBI that no meeting had been scheduled.

The FBI said Hoffa's disappearance could have been linked to the union boss's efforts to regain power in the Teamsters after he was released from prison.

After serving time for jury tampering and fraud at a federal penitentiary in Lewisburg, Pennsylvania, Hoffa was pardoned by President Richard Nixon on December 23, 1971.

Nixon included in the pardon a condition that Hoffa "not engage in direct or indirect management of any labor organization" until at least March 1980.

Hoffa was 62 at the time of his disappearance.

In May 2004, authorities in Oakland County, Michigan, removed floorboards from a Detroit home and found blood that they thought might be linked to Hoffa's disappearance. Milford Township is in Oakland County.

Authorities went to the Detroit home in 2004 after a biography of former Teamsters official Frank Sheehan stated that Sheehan shot Hoffa in the home, just beyond the front door.

Investigators ruled blood found in the house was not Hoffa's. The FBI has a sample of his DNA.

Sheehan, who was considered a confidant of Hoffa's, died in December 2003. Provenzano died in 1988 after being convicted in another murder case and Giacalone died of kidney failure in 2002 at age 82.

Hoffa's son, James P. Hoffa, is the current president of the Teamsters.

It's amazing how many man-hours and tax dollars continues to be wasted in an attempt to find Hoffa's bones after all these years...

Shouldn't the FBI focus on something relevant, like terrorists that are ALIVE and in this country.

Speaking of terrorists on the run....I don't think anyone found Bin Laden yet.

There is no statute of limitation for murder.

It's the job of every law enforcement officer in the country to follow every credible lead that they get.

The FBI is doing it's job, nothing more, nothing less. It's the press who's making a big deal out of this. I'd be surprised if the FBI actually finds anything.

BTW, bin Laden will probably be captured (or killed) by good old fashoned detective work too.

In law enforcement, federal, state, or local, missing person cases are usually low priority...especially missing person cases this old.

The only reason the FBI is putting any real effort into it is because of who it is about. Period. He was officially and legally declared dead in 1983.

Officially it is an old missing person case. Without clear evidence of foul play, the no statute of limitations on murder statement is irrelevant.

    Time well wasted.

Hoffa hunters scour earth for clues
'Much ado about nothing,' official says

    Friday, May 26, 2006; Posted: 9:47 a.m. EDT (13:47 GMT)

MILFORD TOWNSHIP, Michigan (AP) -- Down in a hole on a suburban Detroit farm where investigators are searching for Jimmy Hoffa's remains, clues can be subtle and only a trained eye can spot them.

As FBI agents began digging up the ground where a barn had stood, the excavation was halted Thursday when a university professor leading the work noticed a change in the color of the dirt and a piece of what looked like rotted wood, said the man whose company was hired by the FBI to knock down the barn and dig beneath it.

"You'll see the color will be different. I don't care if it's 70 or 80 years" since the land was disturbed, said Bill Koresky of Able Demolition, who ran one of the excavation machines at the site.

FBI agents and crime-scene investigators took pictures and combed through the soil. At one point, two dogs were sent into the hole. But after seven hours of digging, FBI spokeswoman Dawn Clenney said nothing significant was found.

"Much ado about nothing," Clenney said. She said the search was expected to continue through the Memorial Day holiday weekend.

Koresky said that before stopping for the day, crews had dug a 50- by 40-foot hole that was 3 1/2- to 4-feet deep. A trained eye, he said, can tell whether the dirt has been disturbed by digging to that depth.

The 100-by-30-foot barn was torn down Wednesday as the FBI scoured Hidden Dreams Farm, which once was owned by a Hoffa associate and is located not far from where the former Teamsters chief vanished in 1975.

Before the dig began Thursday, authorities removed a layer of concrete and asphalt that had been the floor of three rooms inside the building.

The search of the Milford Township farm, 30 miles northwest of Detroit, began May 17. Officials have said the search would last a couple of weeks and involve cadaver dogs, demolition experts, archaeologists and anthropologists.

Donald Shouse of nearby Highland Township, who has done business on the horse farm for three decades, said the demolished barn had been built sometime in the 1970s and was the oldest barn on the site.

No trace of Hoffa has ever been found, and no one has ever been charged in his disappearance.

A government investigator said last week that Donovan Wells, who lived on the land at the time, gave the FBI the tip that sparked the intense effort to solve the legendary mystery. The investigator is familiar with the current dig and spoke on condition of anonymity because some of his information came from records that have been ordered sealed by a federal judge.

Hoffa was last seen on a night he was scheduled to have dinner at a restaurant about 20 miles from the farm. He was supposed to meet with a New Jersey Teamsters boss and a Detroit Mafia captain, both now dead.

Over the years, Hoffa's disappearance spawned endless theories -- that he was entombed in concrete at Giants Stadium in the New Jersey Meadowlands; that he was ground up and thrown to the fish in a Florida swamp; that he was obliterated in a mob-owned fat-rendering plant that has since burned down.
