    Spare a moment, please...

I'm sitting here on a Saturday night, having watched the football, had a few beers and listened to a VH for a coupla hours. Been a VH fan for coming on 20 years now but unlike you American fans have never felt close to the band, mostly coz they've never been bothered too much with us over here and until the web its been bloody hard to keep up with whats happening. (Just our luck over here that the web coincides with the death/hibernation/disappearance/whatever of the band, eh?) Anyway, I sometimes think about what it must've been like back in the day, back in the 70s/80s and in the USA, when Van Halen were the big cahuna (is that right?) and were the soundtrack for the times. Being in the UK we were never aware of how big an impact the band had and how their music wrote the soundtrack of the times. Or did they? C'mon, if you've got the time, reminisce a wee bit with me here - what was it like? If nothing else, it'll get us all away from the negativity and doubt that's been going on 'round here for a while. Come on you guys who were lucky enough to be there at the time, what was it like?
Use my hand, I won't look!

Nothing like it IMO. Always able to look forward to new issues of Creem and Circus during the VH tours. Seeing Edward get the MVP every year. Listening to new VH on the radio. Hearing interviews with the boys over the radio. Watching the stage lights go down over the sounds of "Women" by Foreigner and hear Edward's wailing Halen. Lights come up and there they all are, cranking out the tuneage right in front of me (well a couple of rows back). Listening to Edward's solo that went on and on, yet when it finished I still wanted to hear more. Mikey's solo shook the place, it was so loud but so awesome. The sounds he got from that bass were amazing. Same for the Diamond One and his instrument. He had very masterful control I must say. Plus he was very limber if I remember correctly. Big Al's drumming also shook the house when he hit that bassline, tremendously talented on the skins.

    OMG that was great!!!!

btw - sorry, had to add in a few more memories there. I almost remembered something else but it's gone now.

I was 9 yrs old when 1984 came out. My older brother and his friends were always playing Eruption, Runnin' With The Devil, On Fire, etc...Then 84 came out: they were playing Panama, Hot For Teacher, etc... Saw the videos from that tour, came in one day and saw So This Is Love video on MTV and it was over. They were completely over the top. The cockiest lead singer in the world, the best guitar player on the planet, the pint sized whiskey sippin' crazy bass player, and the thunderous drummer who was pounding beers with the diamond looking things on his 84 kit. Their bigger than life/still are in my mind.

The end of the 70s and early eighties was a brilliant time because of
Edward. He was so innovative and visionary that he pretty much
wrote a new dictionary on tone, texture and technique that I can only
compare it to what Hendrix did a decade before. And in VH he had a
brilliant band and live and on record they were untouchable.

The difference in the musical climate of the time, was that then anyone
playing cliches of the 60s & 70s was dead, where today they play the same
cliches ironically. It was an era of invention vs. an era of abstraction.
