Default Mike playing Keyboards for Jump?? Yes, it did happen

We all know the story how they got Mike to play the keyboards for "And the Cradle Will Rock" when played live during the 1980 Invasion tour.

But I didn't know Mike actually played the keys for Jump also during one show -- it happened as you will see here in Sweden, 1984.

Where was Ed?? Maybe too drunk to play the keys?

Thought I saw him playing keys on I'll Wait at the Montreal show too Vin. But I didn't know he did Jump as well, that's pretty cool.

I thought Ed and Mikey played keyboards live for "I'll Wait" and "Jump" during 1984?... Isn't Mikey just playing the bass lines on keys?!??!?!?

I wonder what the one thing was, the last straw that made Ed become so pissed at Mike. I mean the cat can sing, he can play bass, he can play keys, he set up the reunion, he left his band to join VH (albeit a shitty band probably).

It is my contention that the end of VH actually started when 5150 was created. Once Ed had total control at his home, the band was over.

You know the best tone I ever had was with that little bandmaster cranked to 10. Edward Van Halen, 1980, Guitar Player Magazine.

Back to the first post. It does appear that Mike is playing the keys, but is it just the bass parts? The clip doesn't show Ed, you can also hear no guitar. Ed is probably playing keys on his side on the stage(just out of the picture).

Also these were festival shows with strange set ups as opposed to the North American 84 tour.

One other FYI: this is on a great dvd put out by Chris UK, "625/50--The PAL Rarities"
    OSKY Productions

    Disc 1 – Dave Era (61 mins)
    1. Rock Pop – ZDF TV Germany 21/6/80 – You Really Got Me (A+ -
DVD master of Nov. 2003 re-broadcast) And The Cradle Will Rock (A-
2nd gen with a few satellite sparklies, but still pretty good) lip-sync – total
    6 mins

    2. Loss of Control – Promo – colour version - from Australian TV 1980 –
a bit glitchy but much better than the 47th generation B&W copy that
crops up on some Dave era compilations! (B+) 3 mins

    3. Pink Pop Festival, Landgraaf, Holland 26/5/80 – Dutch TV - very short
clip of band playing RWTD + interviews with fans and groupies with the
sound of VH playing live in background - generated with some colour
    drop-out but very rare (B-) 4 mins

    4. Music Box – German TV 1981 – Unchained + short interview –
    lip-sync – (A-) 4 mins

    5. US Festival San Bernadino 29/5/83 – recent re-broadcast on RAI TRE
Italian TV - RWTD, Pretty Woman, YRGM + Happy Trails – (A)
(fantastic quality 1st gen, I have never seen a better recording of this!)
    12 mins

    6. Ear Say - UKTV 1984 – Dave interview + I’ll Wait – promo (no band
apperance, filmed by TV station) – VHS master > DVD (A) 6 mins

    7. BBC Old Grey Whistle Test – Castle Donnington Monsters of Rock
Fest. Leicestershire, UK 18/8/84 – interview with Dave and Al in hotel
room about gig (also includes interviews with Angus and Brian from
    AC/DC) – (A) 6 mins

    8. BBC Old Grey Whistle Test – Castle Donnington Monsters of Rock
Fest. Leicestershire, UK 18/8/84 – Hot For Teacher – live – this and no.
7 are straight VHS TV master! - (A) 4 mins

    9. Swedish TV news reports from Rasunda Stadium Stockholm, Sweden
25/8/84 (Monsters of Rock) – live clips and interviews w/Dave – some
small tracking problems but still very viewable (B) 3 mins

    10. German TV news report on a gig from September 84 (either
Karlsruhe 1/9/84 or Nuremburg 2/9/84) – clip of Jump live + interviews
    with fans – (B) 2 mins

    11. Danish TV 1984 - Short interview with Dave + a comment from Lars
    Ulrich in Danish! – (B+) – 1.5 mins

    12. French TV 1985 – ‘Enfants Du Rock’ interview with Dave for his solo
EP while he was still in VH , (interesting as he strongly hints that he will be
departing from VH soon). – (B) 8 mins.

Yea, Mike was just playing the bass parts on the keys. I have a pic of he and Ed at their keyboards off to the side, and Alex in the middle playin drums. If you listen to I'll Wait from that tour, you can hear Mike doing his thang while Ed takes the guitar solo.

It was a long time ago and many spent brain cells but I would sware there was a keyboard set up on top of the wall of speakers behind Mike which he did play. I seem to remember at one point him playing it but I don't remember which song. Oh yeah it was for the 1984 tour in hartford, ct.

    Cool find!
Bobby Cohn: Who's going to be at Waynestock?
Wayne Campbell: Um, uh...Aerosmith & Pearl Jam!
Garth Algar: Ha ha ha ha ho!
    Bobby: Who else?
    Garth: Uh, me...and...and Wayne...
    Wayne: ...and uh...VAN HALEN!!!
Garth: Wow. Van Halen. Who else?
    Bobby: Yeah, who else?
Wayne: Uh, an old man fashioning a kayak out of a log?

You're right. With their big setup in '84, Mike's keyboard was up above his cabinets, and Ed's was on the other side, above his cabinets.

I`m not trying to be a smart ass but I thought everyone knew this. On the `84 tour he played the keys for Jump and I`ll Wait.

    Default 1984 Van Halen Chicago

Contrary to some of the replies here, Eddie did a very strange thing
on the 1984 tour here in Chicago. He played the keyboards on Jump, which were set up on the guitar side of the stage, 1 level above, like on the sammy tours,
and he had his guitar strapped around his neck, and did not play the solo for Jump. He kept on playing the keyboards live- it sounded great!!!!!

That was by the way the absolute Best Van Halen concert I ever saw!
Bring back Dave !!!! and lets Rock again!!!!

Yeah, he did that in Raleigh, NC during the 1984 show. Played the whole song, solo and all, on the keyboards.
I asked a ref if he could give me a technical foul for thinking bad things about him. He said, of course not. I said, well, I think you stink. And he gave me a technical. You can't trust em. -
