"What the Fuck man... WHOOAAA... UHHH!!!"

The "title's" from "Hot For Teacher" just incase anyone missed it. lol.

Ok, heeya I am typing in the middle of the night (insomnia done striketh the house of Maximus tonighteth but that's beside the point) visiting AND participating on a message board of a band that (in my case, along with MANY others) has been defunct since 1985, excluding the two tracks in 1996 and the unreleased song attempts from 2000. The latter has (in a way) prompted me to write such a thread. Either that or the fact that I'm missing and scayed for someone currently bunking with a ghost in a sleazy motel? lmao.

Anyway, what 'tis with us folks? Are we a fucking cult or what? I'll bet the lot of y'all that at one time or another we've ripped on "Deadheads" or others with such a devotion to a band, no? Seriously, most people nowadays have no fucking clue and nor do they care who or what Van Halen once was nor why peeps like us are so drawn to them and their music. Even I ask myself that question a lot?

For instance, I was lying awake tonight, couldn't sleep (obviously) and what did I do? I plopped some VH vids on the tv.

Why are we all that way and WHY do we NEVER get sick of it? Heeya I am watching the video for fucking "Jump" enjoying the heck out of it, yet I really cannot stand that song?

Is it cos us fans still hold on to that mere shred that someday, someway and somehow a REAL reunion MIGHT commence at some point in time due to the fact that ALL of the ORIGINAL members are still alive and kickin'? Is it cos we've never been given a proper "farewell" tour or performance? Is it cos we've been teased with the slightest possibilities of reunions? Is it cos we KNOW there's a vault of unreleased music and footage out there that they wont let us have? The "imminent" and lacking RORHOF "induction" also rings a collective bell, no? Or 'tis it a part of our youth that we refuse to let go and will not allow anyone to take from us?

Seriously, what the fuck is it that this band's music, personalities and prowess hold over us? Why do we hang around and keep going like Cousin Elmer's plow mule with an apple continously dangling in front of it's mouth?

I'm not in anyway implying that our devotion to VH 'tis a bad thing at all. I'm just asking the age old question "Why are we here?" with the exception of VH being the subject at hand and not us as peeps on our collective rock that we call home.

    What are your thoughts Hobson?

I personally believe that the sounds from Eddie Van Halen's guitar put us all in a trance that we haven't awoken from yet (and apparently never will). It's like we all have this microchip in our brains, not all people have it, and Eruption was the trigger that caused us to respond. It's kind of like that mouse and the cheese and the electric buzzer. There's been nothing for us but a lot of shocks lately, however.

I don't think I'm a Van Halen fan anymore....I made it a few words in....
Actually I think most of us are Dave, Sam, and Mike fans. There's just a small group of people who have strange allegiances and like to get into petty pissing contests that I can't believe everyone on this site isn't bored of. - Brett

Van Halen is a second-rate religion to me. Eddie is God, Alex is John The Baptist, Valerie the Virgin Mary, Wolfie is the Messiah, Mike is St Peter, Diamond is King David, Sammy is Sampson, Gary is Mary Magdalene, Ray Danniels is Judas Iscariot, Gene Simmons is some tax collector despised by everyone, Mark Stone is some poor fellow in a parable once told.

Dave era is the Old Testament.
Sammy era is the New Testament.
Gary era is Dan Brown's 'The Da Vinci Code'.

And the Links is the equivalent of St Peter's Cathedral place of worship.
Bobby Cohn: Who's going to be at Waynestock?
Wayne Campbell: Um, uh...Aerosmith & Pearl Jam!
Garth Algar: Ha ha ha ha ho!
    Bobby: Who else?
    Garth: Uh, me...and...and Wayne...
    Wayne: ...and uh...VAN HALEN!!!
Garth: Wow. Van Halen. Who else?
    Bobby: Yeah, who else?
Wayne: Uh, an old man fashioning a kayak out of a log?

Sadly, the only time I even think about the band, is when I click pen my "favorites" link here in the old Internet Explorer. I prefer to put my thoughts on music to bands that give a shit, play music, and act alive.

Uh, if you want to sleep Max, the last thing you should do is plop in Van Halen videos.
Sammy did the impossible. He made Van Halen better. Deal with it.
Michael did the impossible. He made Van Halen better. Deal with it.

Yeah that's some good stuff there Rov.

And I didn't even know I was religious. Wow. This is very enlightening. So's I guess we all be worshippin at the altar of Van Halen. Wow. All I can say is wow. J/K!

I've oftentimes wondered myself wtf I'm doin in this place and why I'm so fixated on VH when nobody around me even gives a flyin fook about these guys. It's definitely on the brain and has been for many, many long years. There's just something about the Brown Sound that keeps me comin back. I just T/G it's not a physical thing or I'd be in some big trouble! Mental I can deal but physical??? That's a bit much.

Nice pondering thread Max. You Really Got Me.

Max, I think you nailed it to a certain extend regarding the "cult-like" aspect of being a VH fan circa 2006.

The fact is simply that this band ceased to exist as a functioning, coherant outfit long ago. Many seem to think that past glories can be reapproached by (insert singer here) putting on a final farewell tour, yet after what we were "treated" to in 2004, the bar won't be set to high.

And everyone please spare me the mouthings of how that string of shows that you attended was life affirming and transendental to your being. If you felt that way, well more power to you. Yet allow me the dignity of disagreeing, as I'm not pissing in your cornflakes so don't take it personal.

The simple accident of birth has afforded me the ability to see all incarnations of VH over the years, so I'm entitled to my opinion, which is valid in it's scope as a result.

The fact remains that this board has meant much more than VH over the years, quite simply it's the quality of folk I've become friends with in that period of time more than a requisite fawning over the exploits of a band. Being able to comfort and be comforted through PM's is a great thing, especially regarding the turbulence that many of us have gone through over the years.

That quality is reflected in folk like you Max. You've been a damned great friend over the years, and I miss our drunken chats on the phone.

    Be well, bro.
