    Effects Chain Advice

All right guys, I just bought a Boss Noise Suppressor NS-2, and it seemed to work very good last night cutting down noise and feedback in my effects chain in front. However, the thing has 4 jacks, and I get that they want you to use the send and return jacks on the front pedals and then run the in to your guitar, out to amp.

I'm just trying to decide if it would just be better to run it my effects loop, through the in and out I guess. Here's what it looks like.

So here's my 5150's rig, tell me where you would put it. Everything is in order.

    IN FRONT
    Guitar
    Cryaby Wah
    Boss OS-2 (Overdrive)
    EVH MXR Phase 90
    MXR Flanger

    EFFECTS LOOP
    BBE Sonic Maximizer 264
    Boss DD-3 (Digital Delay)

Now Boss suggest putting it right after your guitar and using the send/return jacks to daisy chain all the front effects together.

But my BBE is real noisy, and if I put it after the guitar, obviously it's not killing that noise at all.

So just kind of want to get your guys' thoughts on where you'd put it. I'm not sure in the effects loop how I'd use that send/return, but I suppose it's the same as the front idea.

    Try this config:

    In: Guitar only

Send/Return: BBE will be cleaned by the NS-2 along with the guitar.

Out: other pedals since they aren't creating any noise.
Homer: No one snuggles with Max Power. Just strap on and feel the Gs!

American Coast Guard: Back off Canadians we got them.
Canadian Coast Guard: You back off hosers, they are in Canadian waters, eh.
American Coast Guard: Beat it you puck smacking maple suckers!
Canadian Coast Guard: Take a hike you Shatner stealing Mexico touchers!

Bart: Who the hell is this?
Jack Bauer: I’m Jack Bauer, who the hell is this?
Bart: Me, er… I’m Ahmed Adudi
Jack: Chloe, get me all you can on Ahmed Adudi… Does anyone there know Ahmed Adudi?
Chloe O’Brien: Ahmed Adudi; wealthy Saudi financier… Disappeared into Afghanistan in the late 90s…
    Jack: … Really?
Chloe (ironically): No Jack it’s a joke name, you’re being set up.
    Jack: DAMMIT!

I've got the NS-2 myself. It's the last in my loop. Never had any issues with using it there. Basically I run my effects in the loop in this order:

    Digiverb
    Digital Delay
    Flange
    Phase
    Eq
    NS-2

    Front of amp:
    Overdrive
    Chorus

Pretty much my sound, and I never have any noise issues.

To be honest, I've never used the effects loop on ANY amp. I never had any problems with just running everything out front...

I tried running the phaser and flanger in front but just didn't like the sound of it.

Me to. I've always found that putting effects in the loop sounds like my tone with some goop put on top of it. When I run straight into the front the effects (to me) sound like they are partof my guitar tone and not something put on top of it.

Brett if you're sold on using your effects loop, try the s/r for the bbe and delay. Try the rest through i/o, ie, guitar to the in of the wah/chain/out of n/s to the amp.

Exactly. Running everything out front seems to make the overall sound 'gel' more.

    heres how i run mine.

    guitar > wah > ns2 input > ns2 output to amp

    ns2 send > phase 90 > boss flanger > boss tremelo> ns2 return

bbe 362 and vintage mxr 10 band eq in 5150 effects loop.

i think the manual suggest any time based pedal effects go in the ns2 effects loop.

I guess my question is whether I can use it in front and in the effects loop at the same time, and it seems that you can.

And yeah it says never to use the NS-2 with time based effects in its send/return. So for me, being that my delay is in my effects loop, it can't be inside the NS-2's return/send.

With regards to putting pedals in front. I've had all my stuff in front, but I found that the Sonic Maximizer sounded AWFUL that way, and my delay was way too dominant. When I put them both in the effects loop, I got a much sweeter sound, and the delay unit works basically as a nice reverb, which is what I really wanted to get from it. So much cleaner with those to effects in the loop.

So Rick, you're really not using the NS-2 to quiet the effects in your loop then right? Well wait, I guess you are because you are running the NS-2 into your amp's input. Ok I think I get it now.

i use mine in front of the amp as a noisegate ... always used it set to mute function.

i run the pedals in its loop to clean them up a bit.

i have a pedal board with the ns2 as a little effects loop and noisegate before it goes into the amp.

with the eq boost and the bbe 362 i still have some hiss but its tolerable with ns2

without the ns2 the 5150 is a hiss monster
