Default I'm going to LA and San Diego- what should I see/do there?

I am going to an Angels/Dodgers game, and seeing Pearl Jam play in San Diego. But I have 5-6 days to fill in between the two. Any suggestions-what beaches? clubs, bars, studios, Beverly Hills, Sunset Strip, where etc???

Even though it's an "interleague" game, I hope you're at least going to see it in Dodger Stadium! Try to hit Petco Park when you're in San Diego, too! Gotta go cruise Hollywood and if you have time take a ride down Mulholland Drive. As for the beach, I would go to either Santa Monica, Malibu or Zuma Beach, but I'm sure the locals can tell you if one of the other ones is better!

I used to live in Hollywood and I can tell you this:

If you want to get the Southern California beach fix, go down the coast on the Pacific Coast Highway and check out the beaches in Orange County: Huntington Beach, Newport Beach, and Laguna Beach. Santa Monica, Malibu, and Zuma just are not as nice in my opinion.

In Universal City there is a club called the Baked Potato. There are alway great bands playing here. Usually studio musicians who put groups together to jam, etc. It's a tiny place so you could be sitting literally inches from the stage. I've seen Steve Lukather with Los Lobotamys, Billy Sheehan with Niacin and others. If you like jazz, there is a venue that brings many legends to town. It's called the Jazz Bakery and is located in Culver City. Once I ran into Charlie Watts and Jim Keltner at an Elvin Jones show here.

I'm not much of a cocktail guy and Los Angeles is a cocktail town, so I really couldn't recommend any good bars. I prefer good microbrewed beer and LA is definitely not a beer town.

Definitely check out the Sunset Strip. There's obviously a lot of history there. Check out the following: the Whiskey a go-go, the Roxy, the Key Club, the Rainbow, the Viper Room, the Tower Records is impressive, Carney's is an old train converted into a hot dog joint and they serve the best chili cheese fries (I prefer this place over the infamous Pink's on LaBrea Ave), the Hyatt (or the Riot House), the Mondrian Hotel, the House of Blues, and of course don't forget to check out the Guitar Center with the Rock Walk.

Also, drive around the Hollywood Hills and see if you can find Casa Van Halen and the 5150 studio. Hint...it's located in Studio City north of Mulholland Drive.

The closest you'll see to anything Van Halen is an "Al & Ed's Autosound" store or two!

That's funny. When I first moved to Hollywood I thought that these stores were owned by Al and Ed Van Halen, but there is no such affiliation.

There have been Van Halen sightings at the Ralphs on Coldwater and Ventura Blvd and at the Guitar Center on Ventura.

There is a plaque on the ground outside the Whiskey dedicated to Van Halen. I think they are the only band with such an honor.

If you do hit Mulholland Drive, veer off at the top onto Coldwater Canyon Road and drive past 5150

For beaches, I recommend stuff further south on the 5--Carlsbad, Encinitas, et. al.
    "Suck a fat one, faggot."
-MikeL, showing off that sharp wit of his.

"You may recognize some of these chemicals. Let's start with cyanide...The one the Aum Shinrikyo cult attempted to use to commit mass murder in a Tokyo subway in May 1995...The same cyanide produced routinely--1.4 million tons per year--for use in the production of plastics, adhesives, cosmetics, pharmaceuticals, and so on. It seems that those who put small amounts of cyanide in subways are terrorists. But those who produce it in mass quantities and contaminate broad reaches of soil, water, and air, killing countless living beings, are not terrorists, but rather capitalists, and are counted among the finest and most powerful people on the planet."
