    Default Josephina

In my never ending attempt to appreciate 3 more and more, I really took a liking to this song, which I think was inspired by watching Eddie and Gary perform it on the Syndey 1998 video. It's a pretty decent song, and I like Cherone's vocals a lot. Thoughts?

Great tune...it's about the band members parents little known pasts...i learned that Josephina is actually Gary's mom's name. I think this is one of the better tunes on III...

I don't like III very much, and Josephina is one of the reasons why. Just not a good song IMO.
Taylor Swift is nice to look at. Adele can sing.

It's actually a good song. It doesn't matter if people don't like it. It's well written and has a good meaning. If somebody doesn't like it then fine, but that doesn't make it a bad song.

It's ok, but then the Van Halen III album was ok at best...
“And what we have at our fingertips is arguably one of the greatest high tenor voices ever – that was in Michael Anthony. In our tiny little corner of the universe, that voice is as identifiable as the high voice in Earth, Wind & Fire, as identifiable as the high voice in the Beach Boys. Van Halen is an indelicate house blend of both – that’s intentionally. So I would always look forward to that reunion.” - David Lee Roth

If you are going to be technical, you are absolutely correct. It is a professionally written and performed song; I just don't like it. It doesn't make my foot tap, my head bang, or pull any emotions out of me. It is just there.

    IMHO of course!

Always liked this song, especially considering the deep meaning it had to Gary and EVH.

Ed made a comment about how there are certain subtle things on the album that you can't really pick out, but if they weren't there you'd miss out. Well, there's a sustained note as Josephina is nearing it's end and is fading out. I never caught it the first few times I listed to the song, but somewhere down the line it caught my attention. It's just one note being bent up a full step and back down by Ed. Nothing major, but he's totally right. If that one note wasn't there, there'd be a gap..something lacking. And to me that's what make's the man so great. It amazed me how something so subtle like one note could complete a song.

And don't even get me started on the solo and rhythm playing throughout the tune. Just great stuff. Nothing Halenesque about it, just a good tune IMO.

that's cool, of course. It's just threading that fine line where when somebody doesn't like a song that means it automatically sucks. It's cool if you don't like it, really. I just have a pet peave where people state that when they don't like something it sucks. I don't care for most of Dave solo, and a bit of Sammy too, but I would never say it sucks, I'd just state I don't care for it.

    be cool.

Great tune and that video with Gary and Eddie is nice to watch.
The fade-out is kind of cool, too.

Josephina kind of grew on me. I used to think it was one of the weakest tracks on III, but it's not so bad. The solo is pretty cool.

Agreed...i hate talking about anything on III, but this song grew on me after a few listens. EVHs songwriting and "brown sound" were straying a different path in III mode. That being said, Josephina is probably the quintessential masterpiece from a poor excuse of an album from our boys. NO MORE III talk!
