Default Congress may consider mandatory ISP snooping

It didn't take long for the idea of forcing Internet providers to retain records of their users' activities to gain traction in the U.S. Congress.

If you make an enemy at the ISP, or something similar, the quickest way to get revenge on you is to drop something in your cache. If your wireless network gets an anonymous connection that downloads something illegal, you're toast. If someone plugs into your router and downloads something, you're on a chain gang. If you don't mind going to jail over maybe that or an edition of WTF Fridays, great. Go hold up a sign on the streetcorner and support it. I think its inviting corruption.

    "Suck a fat one, faggot."
-MikeL, showing off that sharp wit of his.

"You may recognize some of these chemicals. Let's start with cyanide...The one the Aum Shinrikyo cult attempted to use to commit mass murder in a Tokyo subway in May 1995...The same cyanide produced routinely--1.4 million tons per year--for use in the production of plastics, adhesives, cosmetics, pharmaceuticals, and so on. It seems that those who put small amounts of cyanide in subways are terrorists. But those who produce it in mass quantities and contaminate broad reaches of soil, water, and air, killing countless living beings, are not terrorists, but rather capitalists, and are counted among the finest and most powerful people on the planet."

-Derrick Jensen, "What We Leave Behind"

"You know what's weird to me is Christians who are against the death penalty. After all, if it weren't for the death penalty, we wouldn't celebrate Easter!"

What if you've downloaded copyrighted material by accident? Or you didn't know it was copyrighted. All those bootlegs listed ON THIS MESSAGE board and everyone who's "Shared" the music can be targeted.

What if that nekkid babe you got in your e-mail from your trusted friend is actually too young to be looked at? Honestly, the way pornography laws are written, if you download an early picture of Tracie Lords you can be arrested as a pedophile.

Last week a discussion broke out here about Chrystal Meth. Odds are that a couple of people decided to google Meth labs and even the instrucutions on how to make it.

The motel I work at has free wireless, we don't have a password - yet, and every once in a while someone parks in our lot and access our network. Like Phatie said, somebody can access an wireless network and download all kinds of stuff. Before the other Network guys get snobby, I understand that everyone's responsable for their own personal network security and I agree. How ever, you can't ignore the fact that there are more and more people bringing wireless into their homes who haven't got a clue about security. What about your Gandmother? She's a nice person, right? Does she even have the basic knowledge of network security? Probably not, doe that make her stupid or negligent? No, it means that she's a normal person over 55 who just wants to e-mail her friends with pictures of the grand-kids. Maybe she bought her computer stuff herself, maybe the family chipped in and bought her a nice laptop because she's in a wheel chair and now she can sit on the front porch and PM her friends.

Then one day, Grandma is haulled away by the police because the sicko down the street was scanning and found that Grandma's network broadcasts nicely to the curb, where he parked his car and downloaded pictures of 10 year old boys. Eventually the cops will sort it out but no until they seach her house, seize her computers, take Grandma down to the police station where she will be booked and cavity seached before being put in a holding cell until someone can bail her out. Then she's got to hire a lawyer, that money comes out of her pocket or she get's public defender. Sure in 6 months the police will clear it up but Grandma's life will never be the same.

I'm a law and order guy but the problem with this is that the Internet is still too new to be doing stuff like this. The bad guys are starting with a huge lead and lawenforcement isn't in a position to patrol cyber-space quite yet.

I'd like to see them wait on this idea for a while.

Sieg heil, brother. The clarity of your thinking cannot be denied. Only criminals would object to reasonable inspection. Those of us who love our country and God have nothing to fear. Hopefully, our leaders will have the foresight to expand this program. Crystal meth could be fought with mandatory home inspections. Tax fraud and the financial irregularities that have shown up in so many companies could be done away with--a law-abiding person has no reason to fear an auditing of their finances. In this day of spiraling energy costs, we could easily attach telemetry devices to all personal vehicles. Speeding wastes fuel, and good people don't speed--let's ferret out the scum that breaks our laws!

Shit, crime could be eliminated if the entire population was simply imprisoned.

Considering the fact that perverts and criminals are currently simply walking into sting operations every day,why change?

This is BS. The framers didn't want big government and you shouldn't either. Where would it end?

It's a bit frightening isn't it? Other than the loss of lives and property, the worst thing about the 9/11 attacks was the government getting yet another excuse for the invasion of U.S. citizens privacy. Things like that and the OKC bombing tend to bring that out in our government.

It always comes down to the classic debate…individual rights advocates vs. public order advocates…
