Default Where Would Van Halen Be Today, If Sammy Wasn't Interested In 1985

Ya, I am bored with no Van Halen activity and trying to find something to talk about. So where would Van Halen be today, if Sammy Hagar just wasn't interested in Van Halen back in 1985. Would it have been Patty Smyth, Eric Martin or some other hopeful back then. Or would DLR have come back after Eat Em And Smile.

    Ah, the mysteries of life.

Bobby Cohn: Who's going to be at Waynestock?
Wayne Campbell: Um, uh...Aerosmith & Pearl Jam!
Garth Algar: Ha ha ha ha ho!
    Bobby: Who else?
    Garth: Uh, me...and...and Wayne...
    Wayne: ...and uh...VAN HALEN!!!
Garth: Wow. Van Halen. Who else?
    Bobby: Yeah, who else?
Wayne: Uh, an old man fashioning a kayak out of a log?

Sadly, they would have likely been long forgotten (although that's not far from where they are today anyhow)...but we've got lots 'o tequila!

I don't think things would have been worse then what they are right now.

Unless they hired Patty Smythe then it could have been. Let me explain. If they hired a no name singer, VH probably would have had great success like they did with Sammy. The timing was right and Eddie had the backlog of melodic songs which would have been successful with anybody singing. Melodic Rock was happening regardless who was fronting VH. If they hired a no-name guy maybe the mud slinging war would not have happened and maybe the relationship with Roth would have been good enough that something after Skyscraper could have materialized.

Maybe they could have done two albums with Roth instead of FUCK and Balance. Closed out their musical legacy with more continuity then having three singers (4 if you count 2004 reunion)

They also could have just bombed with Patty Smythe and called it a day. However they still could have reconciled with Roth and continued to ride the late 80's early 90's wave of hard rock.

Probably would have been inducted in the RHOF by now if that would have happened.

I have a feeling they would have cherry picked a DLR clone from L.A.

God knows there were enough of those back then.

here's a better question, where would Sammy Hagar be if he wasn't interested? That may been the greatest stroke of luck outside of hitting the Powerball.

To your point though, history tells us the band would have either (a) been very successful much like they were with Sammy (Sammy didn't bring a huge name to the band by any means). (b) been a commericial flop, not unlike John Corabi with Motley Crue. And much like the Crue got back together a few years later with Dave, but the band could never be the same. Halen, just like Motley, killed their chance of being the biggest band in the world once the original change happened. If Dave doesn't depart, they're U2 or Bon Jovi (I know the bass player left - no one cares) right now, capable of selling out multiple nights in most cities whenever they want. The consistency of those bands makes them money printing machines at this point in their careers. I wonder if this whole thing would have worked out better if in 1985 if the band just took a break (like Bon Jovi did) and release some solo material knowing that the band would get back to together a couple years later. But instead ...

    Hey Servoguy.

What are we going to do about my quote that is in your sig?

Roth's show did not last a year so technically I did not get my 12 months.

I will admit as Roth's show went on, it became very doubtful that Eddie would have been on there.

    It's Me,

Well in Sammy's defense - he was coming off a platinum record with VOA and I suspect that he would have a had a few more hit albums if he didn't join Van Halen.

Sammy wasn't one of those artists expected to sell 3 million records or he would be dropped - he would have a record deal as long as he was selling what he was with Standing Hampton, Three Lock Box and I Never Said Goodbye. If you recall, Geffen actually paid him millions to do the Unboxed album. Sammy certainly would have had many albums out by 2006 if not for Van Halen and the same respectable career that he has now.

well you make some good points but lets not forget that for the most part VH was one of the biggest bands in the world from 1986-1995, they were in Bon Jovi's league maybe even bigger, but that was then, this is now.

Sam was pretty much the best fit out of all the guys that were availible at the time...

Now come on. You know the answer to your question.

They would've hired David Coverdale of course. And they would've been bigger than even the Great Rock Arch-Lords of Deep Purple.
