Default For Those Of You Who Love Secret Airplane Rumors

Here's a story from Aviation Week about an -alleged - project that may have been mothballed out at Groom Lake:

I used to keep a close eye on this stuff, but not so much these days.

How far up is space, and do we have any aircraft that could actually fly there (not necessarily with the ability to return)?

I'm heading out to check out some blues at the bars tonight so I didn't have time to read it thoroughly, but I definitely will have to when I come back!!!

I'm an Air Force brat so I looooove airplanes and aviation in general...(almost as much as fast things on wheels...)

I remember an old episode of "Wings" that basically stated the SR-71 could do it (though obviously not return), I know it fly's near the edge of space.

We designed that thing way back in the 60's, im sure it wouldn't be a problem at this point.

Too bad they called it 'BlackStar'. 'DarkStar' would have been a cool =VH= reference.

The SR-71 had a maximum ceiling of around 100,000 feet, more or less, with a maximum safe speed of Mach 3.35. It could probably knock out something over Mach 3.5. They didn't want to take it faster because the engines might race and the plane would come apart. Either way, it was friggin fast, I went to Beale AFB in 1986 to see them at an airshow. It's the loudest airplane I've ever heard, it shook your bone marrow, and when they turn on the engines the trees a quater of a mile down the runway bowed.

The X-15 flew higher than the SR-71 but it was a rocket plane.

The key is either to perfect the Scam-Jet or something called the Pulse-Detonation-Wave Excelorator because you need to be moving at 17,000 mph to get into orbit.

They think that DoD was playing around with the PDWE out at Groom Lake back in the 1990s because a fast moving aircraft would set off the seismic sensors as it came in to land in Nevada.
