    In this economy?

Real estate. Land ownership of any kind.

Gold. And not gold certificates or stocks, but hard bullion.

Ask around for a good financial advisor J. It truly is a shaky market to get started in right now. Squalin is right though, especially with real estate. If you have the room to do it, do it, even if you have to sacrifice. There are so many hot markets right now it's just sick. There is no better bang for the buck. Fuck stocks.

Everyone I know who has been successful started with a great financial advisor, start there.

As one of my good friends (who is almost a millionaire btw) once told me, "its too important to just wing it".

It all depends on how much money you have to invest and what kind of risk you are willing to take. If you have a house with no mortgage, take out a line of credit or mortgage and use that money to invest in. The added bonus is you can claim the interest expense as a tax deduction against dividends earned and interest income. Check with the IRS, tho... the tax laws are different up here in Canada.

If you have a lot of money, try this strategy: 50% Mutual Funds, 20% stocks, 15% in real estate and 10% in interest bearing accounts and set aside 5% just in case you need during a poor showing in any of the investments.

If you want to take a higher risk with faster results, try commodity futures trading. Just make small investments and trade at the right time... after a while, you may have more gains than losses.

I've always wanted to start investing in penny stocks, but I lack the $ to even put $100 in a low value stock.

I'm not an expert, so you may want to shop around for a consultant to help you strategize your short and long term goals with investing. Make sure they don't charge you an arm and a leg for the consulting fees!

Jack Bauer: I’m Jack Bauer, who the hell is this?
Bart: Me, er… I’m Ahmed Adudi
Jack: Chloe, get me all you can on Ahmed Adudi… Does anyone there know Ahmed Adudi?
Chloe O’Brien: Ahmed Adudi; wealthy Saudi financier… Disappeared into Afghanistan in the late 90s…
    Jack: … Really?
Chloe (ironically): No Jack it’s a joke name, you’re being set up.
    Jack: DAMMIT!

Stay away from the stock market. If you don't have the funds for real estate, stick with mutual funds. Ask around and find out what other people have as far as rate of return. I have two major institutions I invest with. One is a little safer and is getting a 10% return. The other is Sun Life Financial which is currently kicking ass at 18% and has been for 2 years. Getting an INDEPENDENT financial advisor is the best first step. They shouldn't charge you money and they shouldn't have a vested interest in any particular company or fund. A lot of advisors are paid to direct you towards certain funds or companies.
