    Default Wolfgang Special Shoulder Pain

Has anyone else here with a Wolf Special developed really bad pain in their right shoulder? I've lifted weights for years, so I know that is part of the cause, but this is the only guitar that hurts my shoulder like hell when I play it. The body is not contoured, and is real thick and it seems to make me arch my shoulder at a weird angle that causes so much pain, I can't play it for more than a few minutes at a time. I've tried adjusting my strap to various different lengths, sitting, standing...nothing seems to make a difference. I was thinking about having a professional try and contour the back of the body like a strat, but I'm afraid to fuck up an otherwise perfect guitar. Any suggestions or similar experiences? Thanks...!

Playing guitar is simply not ergonomically correct. I am by no means a medical expert, therefore not qualified to make any recommendations. However, I have had issues myself. You are using muscles and tendons (which run the entire length of your arm) in funky ways hence creating strain, pain or discomfort. You may want to talk to somebody about some stretching exercises you could try. Also, drink a shitload of water!!

    Good luck!

Is the Wolfgang heavier than your other guitars?

Have you adjusting your strap so that the guitar is up higher?

Do you use the same strap for all your guitars? If so, you might try a WIDER strap exclusively for your Wolfgang. Since the problem sets in quickly, you can take your guitar down to the music store and test out a bunch of straps. The wider the strap the more spread-out the weight of the guitar is across your shoulder.

Trust me, you're not alone. I never had any problems until the past year or so. I get horrible strains on my right shoulder and it seems like it takes no time for my left forearm to tighten up. I'm at a loss about what to do. The discomfort in my shoulder and neck is unavoidable for me.

Pretty much what I did, cept my issue was with my Wolf Std Archtop. Playing my special always felt a bit more comfortable, not to mention that I just prefer the sound of it. But the action on the std is just amazing, so I'd been playing it non stop. One problem, my shoulder would f'n kill me. I purchased a wide leather strap from musicans friend and the problems stopped. Plus when I'm sitting I'll play with the guitar between my legs, classical style somewhat. That way I'm pretty much have my hands in the same spot as I would if I were standing. The new strap helped a ton.

Thanks for the advice guys... For the first 15 years I played, I used strats or a Wolfie standard. I developed the habit of resting my right forearm on the top of the body of the guitar. With the Special, the top is flat, but I'm still trying to rest my arm at the same angle, and to balance my wrist to pick correctly, I'm inadvertly tensing up my right shoulder, and I think that's where the problem is coming from. Ever notice how high the strings & top of the pickups are on a special from the top of the body? I've been trying to rest the right side of my palm on the Floyd to take some pressure off my shoulder, but It's hard to pick e,a,g without muting them... I don't know... I'm going to keep fucking with it until I'm convinced I can't play a special then I'll trade it for a strat or something... It just sucks, because the guitar is flawless, and I wanted it to be my main guitar. I guess I'll go back to using my Translucent Purple Wolfgang Standard as my main axe... I had it stored away because I thought they would go up in value, but I don't really see that happening on ebay...
