Default Mean Street Intro - Right on Eruptions Heels

Was just looking at the Guitar One issue again with the tab and video of the Mean Street intro. My god, that is some sick shit. It's one thing to imitate it (and the guy on the Guitar One disc does a helluva job), but it's another to CREATE it. How the hell Ed had the genius to create something like this is beyond me.

I know Eruption is the king of Ed's creations but the intro to Mean Street is right on it's heels if you ask me. Ahead of Spanish Fly, ahead of Cathedral, ahead of Little Guitars, ahead of everything else.

If you just look at the tab to the whole intro you can get dizzy trying to figure it out. It's such a phenomenal piece of work.

I agree, Eruption is what it is but it's not THAT hard, the tapping sequence is pretty easy, there's some string skipping in the first few licks to watch out but you can master it.

The Mean Street intro on the other hand can be a pain, actually it IS a pain. I'm currently working on it. The tap/slap intro is a tight combination of rythm, synchronicity and control and for the tapping licks you gotta mute the strings or you'll get unwanted string noise AND at the same time tap quite hard to hear those harmonics at the 14th, 10th, 11th frets.

See, as I said above, I've heard people play Eruption note for note to the point it was identical to the original but I have yet to hear the same thing for Mean Street's intro.

You guys actually sound like you are players. From a fan's (like myself) point of view I agree. Eruption is legendary. Mean Street is much more underground; all VH fans know it but it's not common knowledge to the world. In my opinion, it should be. When I was about 13 and my US Festival came in the mail from my boot guy in Candada, one of my clearest memories is when Ed does the Mean Street part during his solo. My neighbor/buddy just looked at each other in awe. We'd never seen anybody play guitar like that. Ed's the man.

Yeah, I've heard Eruption played note for note, but Mean Street is sick! My band plays this song as one of the covers in our set, but we don't even attempt the intro. The feel is the big thing. Who in the hell thinks to play slap and tap guitar, other than King Edward? I think it is the coolest thing anybody has ever done on an electric guitar.

Great playing, especially on the opening thumb/fingers tapping section. Very impressive shit.
