Default Monopoly rolls dice, changes look

    Monopoly rolls dice, changes look
The legendary game, out since 1935, will have a new, contemporary version this fall.
    April 24, 2006: 9:39 AM EDT

NEW YORK (CNNMoney.com) - Monopoly, invented in 1935, is getting with the times.

The game's updated Here and Now edition, which is due out this fall, will replace Atlantic City landmarks with legendary streets, neighborhoods and national monuments.

Until May 12, fans can vote on www.monopoly.com for their favorite landmarks from 22 cities — including New York's Times Square, Chicago's Wrigley Field, Honolulu's Waikiki Beach, Beverly Hills' Rodeo Drive and San Francisco's Golden Gate Bridge.

Additionally, the votes will determine where each landmark will appear on the game board, the city with the most votes landing on the coveted Boardwalk spot.

"We encourage Monopoly fans to help create the look of our new game board by voting often at our website for their favorite landmarks," Matt Collins, Vice President of Marketing for Hasbro, said in a statement. "Your vote could be the difference needed to land your favorite American city on a blue property space."

Among other changes, the railroads will be replaced by New York's JFK airport, Chicago's O'Hare, Los Angeles' LAX and Atlanta's Hartsfield-Jackson.

Property values will rise, money will be in higher denominations and "Community Chest" and "Chance" cards will reflect more modern scenarios.

But, the original version will still be available for sentimental fans of the game.

How did they pick some of those landmarks? I bet we could all put together a list of landmarks. Now that would be an idea...personalized Monopoly games.

Baltic and Mediterranean need to be replaced by Compton and the entire state of Maine!

Las Vegas should take the place of Boardwalk.

Special edition Monopoly forecloses on Boardwalk

    Thursday, May 18, 2006; Posted: 7:44 a.m. EDT (11:44 GMT)

ATLANTIC CITY, New Jersey (AP) -- First, Miss America dumped Atlantic City. Now Monopoly has too.

The maker of the popular board game doesn't plan to include Atlantic City's Boardwalk property in a special edition scheduled to be released late this summer.

Monopoly maker Hasbro Inc. confirmed its plans in a letter Tuesday to New Jersey civic leaders, who launched a petition drive to keep the property in the new game.

The original version -- in which Boardwalk is the most expensive and prestigious property -- will still be sold.

In the "Monopoly: Here & Now Edition," the game board will feature streets, neighborhoods and national monuments from 22 U.S. cities.

The cities, picked by Hasbro based on population, popularity as tourist destinations and input from the company's game designers, include Chicago, Illinois; San Francisco, California; and New Orleans, Louisiana.

The Pawtucket, Rhode Island-based company said it would try to include Atlantic City in some way in the new game. One possibility is through the Chance and Community Chest cards, although no decision has been made.

Last year, organizers of the Miss America pageant announced plans to move the contest to Las Vegas after 84 years of crowning beauties on the Boardwalk.

There are about a thousand different version of "Monoploy" (from the NASCAR version to the NHL & NLB Versions, the NYC version, the Disney version, the Elvis version and so on) that this "Here & Now" version is no big deal.
