Default Producing a New VH Album

No, this isn't a post that belongs in the rumors section.

Kind of a Cosmo question for everyone. If you were named producer for VH, (with either Sammy or Dave, your choice) how would you do it? Would Eddie be in charge? Would you let the singer take charge?

Personally, I'd have the band put together a set of songs like they were getting ready to record them. No studio, no tapes, just a simple set up, like a garage or aircraft hanger. Then, I'd get a booking at a very small club under an alias band name. No mention of who the real band is. No mention of anything related to the band. Then, I'd pile the band and essential equipment ONLY!! into a chartered plane and fly them to the gig in total secrecy. In the mean time, I'd get a "band" to set up some recording equipment without regard to the true act. VH would show at show time, plug in and play their new songs intermixed with classics, so the audience won't be totally lost. I'd record this set, not expecting much. After an intermission, they'd come back and play the new songs exclusively. That way, the audience can react to them as their played. This set would most likely be the record. This way, none of them would really be in charge and you'd get the true feeling of VH.

No overdubs, no remixes, no BS. And that's how I'd produce a VH album!!

Eddie's control would be limited, it seems like since he took too much control Mikey doesn't get to play his own f'n instrument. Hagar or Roth would be likewise, I think every member should get to contribute equally, aside from Eddie and the singer doing the writing. Ray Daniels would be shot if found on the 5150 premises, as would Mike Post.

I would be in control with lots of input from the band members. However Ted did it in those days since that seemed to work well.

First of all....I sit Ed down and explain he has control over what the music is and how it is conceived. Then he comes to an understanding that I bring the other parts together to make his music come to life. There are 3 other parts that make this thing whole. Always has, always will. It's my job to put the parts together. He can make whatever music he wants, but that's where his power stops. No one else has anymore power (than anyone else) either. They bring in what they offer the band. When we are in the studio there will be no drinking. What you do on your own time is up to you, but when we are working, it is all about the music and putting these four parts together. Also we only work together for 2hrs a day. If things flow well, I will look at increasing the time as long as things are working and progressing. The time will never be more than 4 hrs. These are grown men with families and other obligations. They don't need to be in the studio or with each other for 8 hrs a day. With that being said, the time in the studio is going to be fun and productive or I call the session off for the day. Last thing, one night a week we all (families included) sit down and have dinner at someone's house and just talk about whatever. Maybe BBQ one night and a good fish fry the next week. No alcohol at this event either. Once again, this is something for the team, not something just for an individual. Sacrifices are part of being a team. Past events show us that a member of the team can't be the coach. They just need a good coach to show them what they can do as a team with everyone just doing their part and not trying to change or influence another players part on the team.

    Just a thought anyway......

I agree. This sounds good. But Mikey won't be able to bring his Barbeque sause to the cook out, Ed might sneak a drink or two in and it won't be Sam's tequeila, ha, ha.
    Seriously, I like your plan.

Goodluck trying to get control over Eddie!

There will be new music, but I think the days of a producer are OVER.

    We'll see...

If offered the gig, I'd turn right around and do everything in my power to hire a REAL producer, Warren Haynes! End of story.

Put Ed in one glass box plucking away riff after riff & Sam and Dave on opposite sides writing lyrics to it, then it goes to a vote and the winner gets the song...
Sam, Dave,Gary... who cares. its all about what makes you feel good.

i'd put em all in the studio, lock the doors and pull the curtains. I'd have plenty of booze, weed and other goodies, great food and a couple of chef's.
In the studio, i'd have huge cages and glass boxes with unbelievably hot and horny chicks chained up, together and in various activities, but off-limits to the boys until they do the music first, to my satisfaction.
I'd let em fight, kick, scream, drink, sleep, eat, piss, whatever they want. But once they go in, they dont get out or get the girls til im satisfied with the material on tape.
No negotiations on that and i have the final word on all disputes.

Either that, Or they can get someone else!

I would do it like this with Dave as the singer.

Find that studio where this picture was taken and record there. No 5150 where Eddie has total control.

Tell them to remember how it felt to be 20 years old and about ready to take on the world. Go back to that place.

Tell Eddie he is only allowed 2 overdubs on the entire album. No rack mounted effects. Only phaser and flanger. No bridge pickups allowed.

You have 14 days to make this CD. Start jamming and come up with totally new music.

No keyboards, sustainers, swords, neck braces, headbands or hot sauce.

well there are a couple of ways I might do it but either way the first thing I would say is "Ed, play your guitar and your keyboards if you want, other than that you don't do jack, no bass, no writing lyrics, no singing lead, no playing drums, no producing, no engineering, no mixing, no nothing" then I would say play me what you've got. I'd rather work with Sam but that's me so I'd have Sam listen to the stuff Ed's got and what grabbed him is what he would work on first, then it would be just like they did with FUCK, Sam you go work with Ted Templemen or whoever on lyrics and I'd work with the others on the music. Once one song was done, completely done we'd move on to the next, I don't care if it takes a year but if that's what it takes to make a great album that's what it takes...this is pretty much how they did FUCK and I love that album, I think they rushed Balance, I think they did that album in like 3 or 4 months and that was everything, I'd like to let the songs "mature" while they work on em....
