I thought that DLR & Hagar never shared the same stage together while Dave was in VH...

    Default well..

I think I read a story in the Guitar Legends (EVH issue) that they had shared the stage together... Eddie had gone up and spoke with Sammy because Eddie was a fan of Montrose... Dave never liked Sammy from then either..

I could have sworn I read that in the EVH issue of Guitar Legends... Can anyone back me up?

ya, I remember that Eddie said he was a fan of Montrose and Sammy. Eddie said that Dave couldn't stand Sammy and Ed couldn't understand why. Funny thing how one of the people Dave didn't like ended up taking his place.

The "Dave hating Sammy rumor" goes like this:

"SUPPOSEDLY" when VH was signed, WB wanted to drop Dave and get Sammy from the get go.

I've read this a TON in all my myriad VH dealings, and I'm just passing it on. I'm not stating it as fact. I'd also like to point out that I AM glad that it didn't happen.

Do I remember than they wanted to get Billy Sheehan to place bass from the get-go early-on?

I read something about Eddie wanted a huge bass sound like in "Rock Candy", so they stuffed newspaper in everything in the studio to get that effect for the first VH album.

I also heard Warner wanted Sammy instead of Dave.

I think they played on the same bill in Texas or Oklahoma in '78 or '79 at some music festival and Eddie went up to Sammy and told him he was a fan of his. Don't remember any Dave comments though.

Yeah, Alex said they were told this by WB right after Hagar had just joined the band. It all sounds too coincidental to me. I say its bullshit.

Actually according to Alex, WB told the band about Sammy's name being tossed around for their singer "4 years after the fact" meaning would probably be around 1981 not 1985.

It would be good if someone in WB could clarify this story for us.
Bobby Cohn: Who's going to be at Waynestock?
Wayne Campbell: Um, uh...Aerosmith & Pearl Jam!
Garth Algar: Ha ha ha ha ho!
    Bobby: Who else?
    Garth: Uh, me...and...and Wayne...
    Wayne: ...and uh...VAN HALEN!!!
Garth: Wow. Van Halen. Who else?
    Bobby: Yeah, who else?
Wayne: Uh, an old man fashioning a kayak out of a log?

Either Ed or Al ( can't remember ) confirmed that "The powers that be" (WB) wanted Sammy from the start. It was said on the MTV show VH Unleashed back in '86. I'll have to watch it again. But I think it was Al who said it.

I think it was when they signed it they were told to replace Roth with Sammy and Dave wasn't too happy with the news. The Guitar Legends mag that I have says that Ed was a fan of Montrose and hired Sammy. I don't remember if it said they were touring together sometime before Dave left the band. I'll look through it again.

I've heard this replacement rumour in the past as well. If WB actually had the nerve the tell VH upon signing that the LEAD SINGER should GO and strongly suggest a replacement is about as arrogant and pompous as a corporation could get. I'd had said F#CK YOU like Buddy Holly did back in the day and walked. VH had the recording industry in the palm of their hands at that time and anyone else would have signed them.

That's IF this is true, of course! Sounds likes some bullshit Al would make up to me.
