Default Speaking of the 5150 Album

I have seen a few discussions about the album 5150 lately and as I was driving to work today I stuck it in and it really is one hell of an album. I am a a DLR fan for life but must give credit where it is due. My questions is think back to the anticipation of the album with Sammy, at that point it had only been Dave, when you got your hands on it and put it on, when you heard Good Enough what did you think? I remember thinking DAMN! What a rock out song. I've always wondered what others thought that very first time they put it in...

i remember studying for a huge exam in high school...might have even been finals...not sure...1986 was my senior year...

...but i ran out to the local record store and picked up the record...yes, record...and listened to it about 3 times in a row...i loved the album and was even happier to see that these guys were great friends now...boy, did that ever change...who knew....

I remember hearing why can't this be love on the radio and liking it.

When I bought the album, it blew my mind.

It sounds a bit dated now...maybe more so than any Van Halen album, but they took some chances...Sammy sounded great...Songs like Get up, Good Enough, and Best of Both Worlds will always stick out for me, but the song 5150 might be number 1 or 2 in the Sammy catalogue.

I remember the big build up on the radio for the first single, "WCTBL". The radio station said they were gonna play it sometime that day so "please stay tuned..." I was a senior in high school and it was the LONGEST day at school because I thought for sure I was gonna miss it. Luckily, they didn't play it until about 4:00 that day.

Honestly, I was disappointed with WCTBL. It was like, "Uh oh....this isn't good." I bought the album the week it came out and loved it beginning to end with only one real exception - Get Up. To this day I still hate that song and skip it everytime. I've also never really taken to WCTBL. I don't know what it is, the song just doesn't get me fired up like most others on the album.

VH with Dave ('78-'84) - The best years....the "real" VH.
VH with Sam ('86-'96) - Incredible era....."We have renamed this town 'New Halen!'.
VH with Gary ('98) - Fucking disaster. WTF was that??
VH with Wolf/Dave ('12-'15) - Amazing comeback. Smokin' album and tours.

I think this album would much less dated if it were remastered. I don't think it's so much the content of the album as the way it was orginally recorded, although it definitely is one of the more dated compared to the others.

86 was the year following HS graduation for me. Was working as grocery bag boy and going to college. Remember how hugely disappointed I was when Dave left the band. Picked up 5150 to give it a curious listen and was just despondent. It sucked. Just didnt do anything for me. Van Halen was dead and I was heart broken. It just so happened that about the same time I had tickets for Van Hagar in Shreveport. I just couldnt muster up the excitement to go. Hocked my tickets and completely lost track of this once great band for over 10 years.
    Winners? they come and go..
    Legends? they're forever!
