Default If the album 5150 was still with Dave and not Sammy

We all know how different the sound of 5150 was as compared to all previous VH albums. Do you think Dave's voice would have sounded right over the new sound that was 5150? Did Ed change to the new sound as a way of signifying a 'new beginning' of the band?

I'll never forget the first time I heard that album at the time it was released. My first instinct was, "this is Van Halen?" But it grew on me immediately.

Would Dave have 'approved' the new sound? I have always thought that new sound was done on purpose as a way of telling us 'this is the new Van Halen....get used to it."

    Any thoughts?

For me the beginning of the "new" Van Halen really was 1984. I mean, Jump and I'll wait were soooo different then everything they did prior to it.
Had Dave quit after Diver Down, I would join all the Sammy bashers who say Sam made a pop band out of the mighty CVH. But he didn't. So I think Sam had nothing to do with the more mellow approache of songwriting. It was Ed's choice (and there's nothing wrong with that), he took the band in a new direction.

Although, with Dave the lyrics would have been better....

To be honest, thank god Sammy was the one to do 5150. I love that freaking album...couldn't imagine not having it.

A lot of the material on 5150 was already written before even Sammy joined the band. Eddie has stated in interviews that he has demos of Dave singing on what eventully ended up as Summer Nights. Some of the riffs were on the Wild Life soundtrack which pre-dated 5150.

I think it would have been different, yes. And Dave would have sounded fine. I'm not saying Dave would be singing "Dreams" or "Love Walks In", but it would have been just as successful as Sammy's 5150. At the time, 1984 was their biggest album. Most bands only have one album where everything lines up perfectly. 1984 was that album. They would need a monumental album to top 1984. Even bands that stay together can't keep up pure magic again and again.

Dave went straight into pop just like Eddie did anyway. Its funny that Dave didn't want to do keyboard songs, only to leave Van Halen and do his own keyboard tunes. Dave gets all the credit for Van Halen's cock rock attitude, yet his Van Halen "wanna be" band sounded just as poppy and processed as 5150 did. 5150 was better of course (in my opinion).

Dave would have sounded fine on 5150. The lyrics would have been different, but not better as some would have you believe. The structure of the songs would have probably been a little different due to the lyrical difference between Dave and Sammy, but it still would have been a great album.

I don't think certain songs would have been used. I don't think they would have used Dreams or Love Walks In. In the end, I don't think Dave could have put anything worth a shit to the music...it's out of his range. Ed may have had the music, but the songs wouldn't have materialized. Just my two cents.

I could easily see him making the rest of the songs his own, however. The album still would have been great.

Hmmmm...I thought that "Eat Thy Neighbor" became "Summer Nights?" I could be wrong, but regardless, I'd give anything to hear Dave's version of either though. It's been said that there were at least three completed songs with Classic Van Halen preparing for the album that ultimately became 5150...

IMHO...and this may not be much, but if EVH is playing on it, I can't imagine it not being great. I know people will point to three and say well..?? I think 3 is underated ...I know, I know... cliche....but I think the guitar work on that album is great, and I think with the wonderful music the band made for 5150, and the great production, not only would it have been great with Dave, but it would have been great with Gary also. It all comes down to Ed and his amazing ability to come up with great riffs, and a competent producer!!

I thought Summer Nights was the first song Sammy and VH wrote together as a band. I'm sure I read that somewhere in an interview with Sammy or Eddie

    Default 5150

Actually, Dave and Ed have both said that a lot of the music for 5150 was already completed while Dave was still in the band. How many demos exist with Dave's vocals we'll probably never know. I hope that someday, Ed has a change of heart and lets some of the stuff out that he has in the vault.

What if Eat Em and Smile had been with Ed and not Steve?

What if we had had the best of EEAS and the best of 5150 combined and meshed into one unbelievable VH album?

    That would have been amazing.

    Who screwed that up, again?
