    Default Why no piano/keys ever?

Other than playing verbatim what's on the cd's, has Eddie ever played keys/piano is a public performance?

Today, I was listening to a Zep boot from the late 70's. They did a 20-min version of No Quarter where John Paul Jones steps out from behind the bass to play keys. They added about a 6-min portion to the middle of the tune where he played a real traditional piano part over the Page and Bonzo as a trio. It was very cool.

It got me wondering if VH has ever done anything unique like that. I know getting crazy for VH live is adding a few measures to a tune, so it's unlikely they'd do something that different. In '04, stepping out was adding 4-measures of My Generation at the end of Runaround.

Has EVH ever jammed on keys in a more improvised way -- or just playing verbatim from the albums?

My memory is unclear, but what about Dave's Tai-Chi Solo bit on the 1984 tour?

Yes. Ed played keyboards on the 1984 tour for Jump and I'll wait.

Check out the Las Vegas boot. There's even a part where some dude throws a quater in Dave's eye during the intro to I'll Wait and Ed needs to jump off the keyboards and start to improvise with the boys on guitar while Dave is backstage getting looked at.

Ed played Keys on the 5150 tour and I think the OU812 tour, it's been awhile since I watched a boot of anything from that tour but I'm pretty sure he played em. He also played an acoustic piano at the 1993 bridge benefit with Sam, they did Right Now and Love Walks In..just Ed on piano and Sam singing..it's pretty damn cool. Ed also played the intro to Not Enough on David Letterman back in 95.

During the 2004 tour he was seen in a hotel playing the grand piano. Playing jazz and other material.

However live I don't think he has vamped too much.

Watch the LWAN performance, Ed plays keys on it, while Sam does the guitar parts.

He also played piano on "How Many Say I" on the 3 tour.

That's true...I remember the vid for Loves Walks In. Ed plays the keyboard while wearing those parachute pants that we all love so much around here.

I guess I'm wondering, though, whether he's actually stepped outside of playing what's on the cd note-for-note. Recognizing he rarely does it on guitar, I assume the answer is 'no', but I just wondered.

I know this discussion's been had, but listening to the Zep boot and the creativity in the tunes (most of which were extended and allowed all the guys in the band to vamp), it made me wonder if/why Van Halen never ventured away from the original structure of the tune.

I guess EVH never saw any need to?

Which was quite a treat, especially as an encore.

OU812 is the last tour I've seen where Eddie plays keys regularly. I'd love to see him play the keys from the 'III' tour.
