Default What to do in San Jose

I'm going to be at a conference in San Jose next week and plans to meet an old friend have fallen through. Anybody have any ideas how to kill a couple of evenings there? I'll be downtown near the convention center ( I guess that's downtown ). The Sharks are out of town that week.

What ever you do, don't go to the Wendy's on Bascom Road in Campbell - they serve Pepsi!

Seriously, though, I have no idea!

or if you like rides take a cruise to Santa Clara?

or if all else fails, drive up to the city.

I guess I was sorta picturing a nice hole in the wall with a good house band. Something like that. I suspect that Thu. night we'll wind up in San Fran. The conference (Embedded Systems Conference) was there last year, which is great as a tourist, but a large percentage of the attendees are local and from the San Jose/Santa Clara area.

Check out the Voodoo Lounge. It's right downtown and the Improv and the San Jose Bar & Grill (good sports bar) are near by. You can check them out online.

If you are a total geek, you can drive around and check out all of the hi-tech company business parks (Hewlet Packard! Weeeee!)

If you're looking for nudie-bars, the Pink Poodle is legendary.

If you have access to a car you are only 30 minutes south of San Francisco. Depending on how tired you are that can be an option too.

Heh - yeah my two previous impressions of San Jose is that it is a bit like a giant office park. I get no real thrill from seeing hi-tech buisness parks, I'll get to play geek all week I do remember hanging out at Gordon Biersch and that seemed like a cool place.

I imagine we'll wind up in San Fran at least one night - Any idea how the train there is? I know there is a train that makes that run until around 1am, but I don't know the area well enough to know if it is safe.

It's Caltrain and it's safe to take. I forget how late it runs though. Let me talk to some friends tomorrow and get some names of places in the downtown SJ area.

I remember going to the Winchester Mansion. Are they still giving tours?

I was gonna say hit a Giants or an A's game if you have access to transportation. They aren't far away.
