Default Newly Released Guitar World Interview

Anybody see the latest Guitar World magazine with Eddie on the cover? They ran an unreleased interview from 1982 where Ed talks about the Fair Warning album. Boy does he sound like a dick!

He bags heavily on Mike and says that he does nothing and that Mike is basically unneccesary.

This may have been the start of them looking to get rid of Mike. He seems to pretty bitter, saying things like Mike makes all his money off of Ed. He, of course, doesn't crap on Alex who has just as little to do with the music as Mike.

I can't wait for Mike to write the book! It's so depressing when you realize how you're childhood hero is a lousy human being.

What issue is that? June? I have the May issue with David Gilmour and that's the last one I've seen.

well, when Billy Sheehan joined up with Dave he used to tell the story of how Dave and Ed scouted him at clubs during his talas days..he says they asked him to join the band but before he could say yes or no Ed called him and said forget about it cause he felt bad for Mike...this does not surprize me at all...

Whoops - sorry it was Guitar One Magazine. It's a tribute to Fair Warning since it came out 25 years ago. Has a whole bunch of lessons and tab for Mean Street.

    Sorry for the confusion guys.

The interview was from 1982 but just released now.

I picked up that issue last week. Ed also goes off on Roth, stating that his range sucks. It comes across as if he was drunk at time. Now there's a shocker.

You know...even with as HUGE an ego that Dave has, he'd be the first to tell you that ALL 4 original members
were equally and/or very important in their sound...their success...etc!!
Eddie's will never rip on his brother...but, he has openly ripped on DLR (sometimes justifiably)...but, Dave has NEVER had range...
but, they were pretty f*cking successful with him now, weren't they!?!!
He rips on Mike...but, without Mikes' background vocals, I don't think they'd have been the same.
Dave has ripped on all of them...but, NEVER (to my knowledge) ripped on them regarding their lack of talent!!

As a fellow musician, I understand what it's like to be in a band where not all the guys are able to execute what the creative mind has to offer. Trust me, and some people here are bound to know what I'm talking about, it really is frustrating! Maybe the interview was made at a particular time when Ed felt that the musicianship of his bandmates was inadequate, and he was frustrated over it. It doesn't mean that he hates his bandmates or anything at all.

i have to pick up this issue and read the interview.
even though i haven't read it yet, i'm not entirely surprised at the content.

not all VH fans have been following the band since those days, but those of us who have remember that EVH was really in a dark place back then.

there was a LOT of tension in the band and pressure from WB to write a hit. additionally, EVH has often looked back on that time and said how miserable he was. the band would record during the day and fight about all sorts of bullshit. then, at night, EVH would sneak back into the studio and re-record solos and stuff. this is why Ed built 5150 after Diver Down. he wanted musical freedom.

in a way, i suppose that's why Fair Warning is so incredible. it comes from a very dark, angry emotional place musically. it's my favorite VH album and even though it's certainly not the most generally popular, it's probably the most overall respected album by musicians -- especially EVH-inspired guitar players.

it's just chock-full of riff after excellent riff. the solos are just phenomenal... what energy... definitely not for any wimpy souls...

    Guitar One...

The same guys who had Ed at the top of their "Guitarists Who Should Retire" column. This will make the second time this year they've had an article about Ed that's 20 years old.

They bag on him one day and then use him to sell magazines the next.

For the record, Ed was thinking about quitting the band durring the recording of "Fair Warning", so he wasn't a happy camper and anything he would have said wouldn't exactly be a glowing review.
