    Default The Open Road

In the Simple Pleasures thread, there were several mentions made of the joys of hitting the highway and leaving the everyday distractions behind. I used to really enjoy driving, just seeing new places go by while I played some of my favorite tunes - not something I get to enjoy much these days with gas prices and cell phones and kids that could give a damn that there's a world outside their windows. Still, the thoughts are in my brain and I try to make the most of a drive when I can.
What are some of your favourite drives and also, those with kids - how do you keep them involved? I REFUSE to have a video screen in my vehicle - bad enough they have their faces buried in their Game Boys until it's either too dark to see them, the batteries run out or they fall asleep - TV in the car/van is just WRONG! We have one game that we play where everyone takes turns picking out a gas station, hotel (sometimes 2) and a couple of restaurants, and then I pick a starting point maybe 20 miles away and then once we hit that point, as we pass signs for their establishments and they get checked off, and the first one who gets all four wins...the satisfaction of knowing they won! Anything to get 'em to look out the window, if even for a bit. Nothing more annoying than when we drive by something cool that I point out and then turn around and they're all asleep (in the middle of the day)...

I have been wanting to get my GTO out and drive the entire length of Route 66. On weekends, I like to get it out on country roads with the radio cranked and just cruise around, looking at the sites.

couple more days and i'll be putting the soft top back on the Jeep, then i'll be waiting for a 60 degree day so i can drop the top and drive. i don't even care if it's just going to work, i want the top down. i will always have a convertible.

one day i'm gonna make the 2 1/2 hour drive to Toledo with the top down, but i think the wind noise may kill me. maybe i'll bring some earplugs home from work...

A drive along the lake is always relaxing for me.

And I don't believe in having a tv screen in the car either. My kids bring games or books. That is, when we travel which hasn't been in quite a while. I think we're due for a trip tho.

Ah, yes. The pleasures of a sunny drive.

My second vehicle was a 1987 IROC Z28 Camaro. She was black, beautiful, and came equipped with t-tops. My, how I adored her curves...

Between the ages of 16-23, there was no greater pleasure than detaching those t-tops on a nice, sunny day, cranking 5150 and just ... driving.

I love the days my hubby breaks out our '71 Cutlass Sureme convertable and we just drive. It's really nice. The sun just deating down and the breeze blowing through you hair. Lord I love it. Radio turned up high. Now that it's getting nice and hot down here with little chances of rain. Plus the traffic will be better since the snow birds will all be going back home. We'll be doing that more and more.
