Default Graceland to be designated national landmark

Elvis' home to be designated national landmark

    Friday, March 24, 2006; Posted: 8:54 p.m. EST (01:54 GMT)

MEMPHIS, Tennessee (AP) -- Elvis fans already consider Graceland a national treasure.

Interior Secretary Gale Norton will arrive in Memphis on Monday for ceremonies to make the designation official.

The home of Elvis Presley, which hosts more than 600,000 tourists a year, will join the Alamo, Pearl Harbor, the White House and Mt. Vernon as a National Historic Landmark.

Graceland, bought by Elvis in 1957 for $103,000 (euro86,055) with earnings from his first hit record, "Heartbreak Hotel," will be one of about 2,500 national landmarks.

The Interior Department calls these "exceptional" places on its Web page. "They form a common bond between all Americans. While there are many historic places across the nation, only a small number have meaning to all Americans -- these we call our National Historic Landmarks."

"Graceland is so famous it is arguable that on a worldwide basis it is the second most famous home in America," said Elvis Presley Enterprises chief executive officer Jack Soden.

"You go to the far corners of the Earth, and they don't really know what Mt. Vernon or Monticello or Hearst Castle are, but they know what Graceland is. It is kind of in a class of its own."

Graceland has been on the National Register of Historic Places since 1991.

Very well deserved. Ask most people where Garth Brooks, the biggest star of the last 20 years lives, and they will probably give you a blank stare. Ask them where Elvis lived and, well, you get the picture. Just another accolade for the greatest entertainer of all time aka The King.

Cool indeed. I'm sure people might think "what the f**k?", but ELVIS is a very important part of our history, musical and otherwise, the last 50 years.

As a Memphian, I've just got to say this, enough with the Elvis stuff already. Everywhere I go, when people find out I live in Memphis, they usually say something like, "Oh, you must be a big Elvis fan" or "Yeah, that place where Elvis lived right". There's so much more to Memphis than Elvis. Its great that his place is a national landmark and everything, but just once I wish this town would be recognized for something else. We have a great local music scene with bands of all kinds. We've got a ton of local industry here, we're the worldwide headquarters for Fedex and so much more. That's it, I'm done, just wanted to rant a little.
