Default When I Knew Something Was Wrong

When I was younger and before the internet I always just assumed the guys in bands always got along great. I figure the guys in Van Halen were the best of friends, then I was listening to the radio debut of F.U.C.K. (I think). They did the Rockline Radio thing were they play the whole album and have interviews between the songs. At one point between the songs, Mike wished his daughter a happy birthday, everyone else in the band didn't know it was her b-day, and I think it was Alex who asked "How come you didn't tell us?". Does anybody else remember this? That was the day I knew my favourite band didn't really care about each other as much as I thought. From that point on my feelings for the band were never really the same. Does anyone else have a similar story of enlightment?

maybe it's me than. i rememeber all my friend's kids b-days. But it did strike me as strange at the time (and i was only 14 or so), and when I read the Mike interview it rekindled that thought of years ago (interesting the way the mind does these things)

I remember reading an interview with Eddie around the time Balance came out. He was asked, "What does the future hold for Van Halen?" Eddie's response was something like, "Well, I'll play 'till I'm dead. I know Alex will be there, and probably Mike too. Sammy...hopefully." Then it was reported that Eddie didn't like Sammy's lyrics on Amsterdam. Then in Rolling Stone, Eddie slammed Sammy for promoting the Unboxed CD. I even read an interview where Eddie said, "If your going to be a lead singer, you have to be an asshole. Its a rule."

So, after those kinds of things started happening, I figured something was up.

Fuck, I don't even remember my friends birthdays...as for their snotty-nosed kids - forget about it.

Yep, that's true. Reading those at the time certainly would've fueled such speculation that something was not quite right there.

    Wayne: ...and uh...VAN HALEN!!!
Garth: Wow. Van Halen. Who else?
    Bobby: Yeah, who else?

I knew there was trouble when I saw the MTV special they did right before the Balance tour. They were in Pensacola rehearsing at the venue. The writing was on the wall bigtime then.

as soon as anything associated with Balance came out...from the moment I heard DTM I knew something had changed...much to dark for VH, then reading interviews it was like..."are these the same guys?" especially Ed..I kinda thought they regrouped during the 2nd leg of balance, at Pine Knob on the 2nd night Sam and Ed walked out, Sam with his arm around Ed and started into Big Fat Money but it still didn't feel "right" to me. When I heard Humans Being I was like "oh, man..something is really wrong here"

I was starting to get the idea that something was wrong because in the months before the split with Sammy, when KLOS would play a VH song the dj would speak of rumors of problems in the band. Then one day I'm driving and it was announced on KLOS that Sammy had left the band. It was a bummer.

looking back on the Balance Tour...there was a hint of division but it was masked...Sam & Mike travelled to the gigs separate from Ed & Al...at the time they said "the smoker's go on one bus, us on the other"...didn't really have squat to do with smoking.
...and in the end, on dreams we will depend...

I moved to LA in the summer of 96 right after the split. That pissed me off then I heard rumors on KLOS the VH with DLR were going to perform prior to the KISS show later that year. Got to arena early to be sure not to miss this reunion only to be disappointed.
