Is he still touring with double trouble? I saw him with ZZ top and Ted Nugent in 03. Saw Skyryrd with ZZ top in 99 I think, they put on a good show.

Loved the real Skynyrd. Can't stand the tribute band, especially since they sold out and played at one of Chimpy's coronations. Ronnie Van Zant was no more of a Republican than I am, and I'm sure he's still rolling in his grave over that.

Their Hall of Fame of performance was alright, with Eddie King, Artemis, and Bob Burns being in the mix. At least there were more than 2 actual members of Lynyrd Skynyrd on stage that time.

Every one makes mistakes in life but I always be Red White & Blue. No they are not as good as the original lineup, but they can still rock and roll.

Skynard rocked Ironstone Vineyards last night!
The place was packed, (its only hold about 6,000) but what a venue for its size!

The Kenny Wayne Sheppard Band kicked off the evening with a fabulous set that featured BLUE ON BLACK in the middle and closed with Hendrix's VOODOO CHILE. Man he is an awesome guitarist.

Skynard then hit the stage and belted out 90 minutes worth of SKynyrd classics that ended with (of course) FREE BIRD.

Skynyrd’s Street Survivors Gets Deluxe Treatment

Ronnie Van Zant considered Street Survivors Lynyrd Skynyrd’s greatest achievement. A year in the making, the album was recorded twice. Now, on the two-CD Street Survivors - Deluxe Edition - 30th Anniversary (Geffen/UMe), on sale March 4, 2008, the previously unreleased first version debuts alongside the incendiary final studio album from the original Lynyrd Skynyrd issued in 1977.

The package also features the never-before-issued last known recordings of the band, five songs performed live at a Fresno, CA, concert less than two months before the group's famously tragic plane crash.

By 1977, the Jacksonville, FL band — singer Van Zant, guitarists Allen Collins and Gary Rossington, keyboardist Billy Powell, bassist Leon Wilkeson, and drummer Artimus Pyle — had scored four hit albums and become one of America's top concert draws. There was a new member, guitarist Steve Gaines, and the group could take its time with a new album. The first version was recorded at Miami's Criteria Studios in winter 1976 and spring 1977 with renowned producer Tom Dowd. But, dissatisfied with the results, Skynyrd returned that summer to Studio One in Atlanta, where "Free Bird" and "Sweet Home Alabama" had been recorded, and produced the released version themselves.

On Street Survivors - Deluxe Edition - 30th Anniversary, both versions are heard of "You Got That Right," "I Never Dreamed" and "Ain't No Good Life" (the original with background vocals by the Honkettes); three versions of "That Smell" (including a never-before-heard extended guitar jam); a previously unreleased "What's Your Name," and a song dropped from the album, "Sweet Little Missy," as a demo and a master of the also axed "Georgia Peaches." Replacing the two deleted songs were "One More Time," a newly overdubbed track from six years earlier, and Merle Haggard's "Honky Tonk Night Time Man." A Deluxe Edition bonus is Van Zant's autobiographical rewrite titled "Jacksonville Kid," the last song he wrote and recorded.

Street Survivors, the most anticipated Skynyrd album to date, shipped 500,000+ units, instantly earning Gold status. But on October 20th, three days after its release, the band's tour plane ran out of gas and crashed into a Mississippi forest, killing Van Zant, Gaines, his singer sister Cassie, and their road manager, while seriously injuring the other bandmembers. Even as the album reached double Platinum and scored a Top 10 hit with "What's Your Name," the survivors were devastated.

Default Lynyrd Skynyrd keyboard player Billy Powell dead at 56

Johnny Van Zant: His brother Ronnie and Powell are "catching up on things in heaven."

    http://www.jacksonville.com/news/met...ell_dead_at_56

Billy Powell, a longtime keyboard player for Lynyrd Skynyrd who survived the band's 1977 plane crash, died at his Orange Park condo early this morning, according to police.

Orange Park Police Chief James Boivin said Powell called 911 from his condo in Club Continental and was pronounced dead at 1:52 a.m. after rescue crews performed CPR on him. Boivin said he was told Powell had an appointment with his heart specialist Monday but never made the appointment.

Current Lynyrnd Skynyrd singer Johnny Van Zant spent 22 years with Powell in the band. He said the took the news of Powell's death hard.

"You know, they say they've got one hell of a band up in heaven. My brother Ronnie up in heaven is probably saying, 'Billy, what took you so long?' I'm sure they're catching up on things in heaven."

Powell, who went to Bishop Kenny High School, joined Skynyrd in 1972 after working for the Jacksonville band for a couple of years as a roadie. He was seriously injured in the Oct. 20, 1977 plane crash that killed singer Ronnie Van Zant and five other people.

Johnny Van Zant said his brother invited Powell to join the band after he heard him playing piano during a rehearsal of "Free Bird." "Ronnie said, 'What's that?' and Billy said, 'That's the introduction to 'Free Bird.' Ronnie said, 'I like that. You're in the band.'"

The piano introduction to the song became a highly anticipated part of the band's live show, though Johnny Van Zant said Powell was sometimes relucant to jump into the spotlight with it.

"He'd say, 'I don't want to do that, I'm embarrassed to do that,'" said Van Zant. "I'd make him do it: I'd say, 'Come on, it'll make their night.' It made mine."

Earlier this month, Powell and the band took a four-day cruise, called the Simple Man Cruise, on a ship out of Miami with "4,000 crazy Skynyrd fans," said Van Zant.

The band had recorded several songs for a new album and had upcoming gigs in Lousiana, Mississippi and Orlando. They will be canceled, said Van Zant.

"We've got to lay our brother to rest," said Van Zant. "That old saying, the show must go on, always counts. Unless you die."

Guitarist Gary Rossington and Powell were the only members of the pre-crash incarnation of Skynyrd who were still playing with the band. As for the future of the band,Van Zant said, "That's really the last thought in my head. I've given 22 years to the band and hope to do it for another 22."

Van Zant he spoke with Rossington, who lives in the Atlanta area, this morning. "He's hurting," he said. "You know, he was very sad and wondering why all us brothers are leaving him, why he's still here."

Rossington's wife, Dale, reached by telephone this afternoon, said her husband was too distraught to come to the phone. "We're just lost," she said, fighting back tears.

She said band members had long been worried about Powell's health. "But he had such as big huge heart of gold, such a huge abiding faith in God and his savior Jesus," she said.

Powell was married to Ellen Vera Powell and had four children.

"For me," said Van Zant, "if anybody reading your article wants to do something, say a prayer for Billy and his family. That would be greatly appreciated."

that's a shame - he was a nice little piano player and added a lot to those classic Skynyrd records. I believe he was plagued with drug problems in the '70s and may have been the subject of "That Smell", so I wonder if that contributed any to his leaving the stage early.

Still one of the saddest stories in rock 'n roll. Holly, Badfinger, Lynyrd Skynyrd.

Rest in Peace, Billy Powell on piano...

Godamn, it's defnitely not a good thing to be in this band, their story is so full of tragedies... gone at 56...

Now only Rossington is left from the original band, save for Ricky Medlocke who only did a stint as a drummer at the very beginning...

    RIP

RIP Mr. Powell . Thanks for the music.

I always read "That Smell" was about Rossington and his drinking and driving, not Powell. But, I'm not a LS expert.
