Default Who played on VAN HALEN 3. I broke it down song by song.

Hey Van Halen fans…..after all this stuff about mikey and ed on the 3 record, I have started to really listen closely to the playing ( even though I have since this record has come out) and here are my thoughts on the track listing of who played what.

    New world:ed and mike post

Without you: gary-vox,ed-bass and guitars, mike a few backings on the outro and al on drums (though I'm now having 2nd doubts on it….)

One I want:gary-vox,ed-bass and guitars and ALL back ups I'm almost positive, al on drums for sure.

From Afar: gary-vox, ed-bass, guitars and drums hands down.Mike sings "get her out of my mind" in the section before the solo and maybe in the background "oohhh's"….

    Dirty Water: gary-vox, ed-guitar, bass,drums, hammond organ.

    Once:Gary-vox, Ed everything else.

Fire in the Hole: gary-vox,ed-bass and guitar and I'm starting to think even the drums

Josephina-gary-vox,ed-bass, guitars, backing vox and mayyybe drums….i
still think al did this one…but not 100% sure

A year to the day:gary-vox, ed-guitars, mike- bass, al drums for sure. It's sounds like ed,mike and al in the solo section.

    Primary-ed-sitar

Ballot or the Bullet:gary-vox,ed,guitars including that low bass guitar, mike,-bass but it's really tucked in there…you can tell after the low LOUD notes section, as well as the back ground vox,Al-for sure on drums

    HMSI: Gary-backing vox, ed-piano,lead vox.

Michael didn't do shit on this record and too bad too………..

I still love all era's and all records….so...

Whew!!! There it is. I still LOVE this record….but it's intresting to break it down…..even though the "van halen 3" threads have been out done a 100 times over…..

    Anyways…thoughts and comments?

Ok, that's cool, makes me want to listen to that album again (which I like and listen to regularly) and pay attention. I'm just curious to know what kind of details make you decide if it's Ed or Al on drums.

The reason is because I have studied Alex all my life (I'm a drummer). His playing from every single era. On 3….i always kinda thought his playing was strange and stiff. Fire in the hole is stiff to me…he's never played his hats "that" closed on record….and the grooves are a little dissjointed….and after reading that long michael anthony interview and he stated ed played drums on dwd I thought…I knew something was kinda strange on that song…..also with from afar and now even FITH. Al grooves simple but not that simple which leads me to believe ed played on those tracks…..Thanks for the comments bro.

I think it'd take more than one hour to get this all sorted out and put back together again.

No! You are wrong! Ed only played the broom on DWD! It was the Mili Vinilli that played drums, guitar, bass, and last but not least Sang!!!!! If you listen close you can here the broom brake!

Ed said, mike post kept breakin' into "the rockford files" and "magnum" themes,
and it was very distracting,......and that's a fact....

there used to be a thread back before the site got hacked where this guy broke down the bass playing on every track, dude sounded like he really knew what he was talking about..it was a really cool read. I think he said the only songs he was sure Mike played on were, FITH, BOTB and YTTD the rest he said were totally ed and he went really in depth as to why.

I think Alex played drums on Fire in the Hole. Sorry, I can't back up my claim too well, it just sounds like him to me.

I just feel vindicated because I have been saying for years that Mike played little to no bass on the album. People said I was nuts however the playing sounded very similar to what was on Sammy's solo album which Ed played bass on.
