god i can't stand gary there.

not his fault - he's a class act on a real level but he was totally a fish out of water in that context.

it hurts to watch for more than 3 seconds.

whats with eds tone? its so dry and mooshy in a bad way. those wolfs sound a lot better than what i heard there ... maybe those that saw that tour had better listen.

Also keep in mind though that it wasnt all that great recording. If you were live right there, the tone would have been very powerful I am sure.

Mike sings SGMAD better than Roth ever sang it live.

As far as Gary, his vocal performance is very very strong.
If only he had decided to dress like a rocker instead of dressing like some guy in Simple Minds. He just looks wrong for the part even though his vocal ability is rock solid.

I thought mike sounded horrible on SGMD. When I was at the concert I though he sounded good. Just goes to show alcahol and maryjane can affect your perception.

I thought Gary sounded good. Almost as good as sammy does on that song. He was definetly better than Ed or Mike singing in that song. Which makes m wonder WHY?!?

I liked Ed's guitar sound on that tour. If anything it's less mushy than it was in the Sammy days. Alot less processing in the sound. I remembe being really impressed with the sound on that our.

Man, Gary sounds like crap singing SAMMY songs(exception HUMANS BEING) I was at that show back on May 20th 1998. I thought Mike sounded Ok that night doing SGMAD. GARY sounds so much friggin better doing DAVE tunes.

Just goes to show ya, music is in the ear of the beholder. I thought they rocked on both songs. I thought Mike and Gary sang great, and I loved Ed's tone and sound on all three of the shows I saw for that tour.

I like how Gary sings Roth songs. I don't like how he sings Sammy era VH songs. I am sending this topic to VH songs/albums.

Wow, Cherone just looked so....out....of....place. I've NEVER liked the Cherone era and I pretty much pretend it never happened. Watchign those vids just confirmed why I've hated that era so much. Like someone said, this isn't Simple Minds or Duran Duran, it's fucking Van Halen. I'll never understand why he had to be such a fucking homo on stage.

VH with Dave ('78-'84) - The best years....the "real" VH.
VH with Sam ('86-'96) - Incredible era....."We have renamed this town 'New Halen!'.
VH with Gary ('98) - Fucking disaster. WTF was that??
VH with Wolf/Dave ('12-'15) - Amazing comeback. Smokin' album and tours.

Wow. I thought Gary sounded pretty damn good and that MA sounded bad, but hey it's all good then, they were actually out playing.
Taylor Swift is nice to look at. Adele can sing.

Emperor Brett - "I can't believe you guys are analyzing song-by-song Van Halen III? What next, analyzing the script of Stroker Ace looking for some shred of Citizen Kane?"

David Lee Roth did the impossible. He made Van Halen better. Deal with it!

    Default Eddie's Tone

I gotta tell ya. I've seen these guys every tour since 1986. That III tour was the best "tonally" (made up word, but you get it) I ever heard Eddie's gear. I don't know if it was because of the style of Wolfs he played or if it was because he got rid of the wireless, I don't know. I saw them in Chicago that year from seats about 15 rows off the floor, probably 200 feet from the stage and I saw them second row center in St. Louis. There was a rawness to his tone I never heard live before and I really thought it jammed. Especially when they played CVH (I'm the One - ROCKED).

    Later.
