The Navy's Legendary F-14's Retire for good...

U.S. Navy Retires 'Top Gun' Jets
    Friday, March 10, 2006

VIRGINIA BEACH, Va. — There will be no more dogfights for the Tomcat.

The last two squadrons of the sleek, Cold War fighter jet returned home from their final deployment Friday, two decades after the warplanes were glamorized in the 1986 Tom Cruise movie "Top Gun."

All 22 Tomcats of fighter squadrons VF-213 and VF-31 arrived in style, flying together in a wedge formation over Oceana Naval Air Station as hundreds of sailors and their family and friends cheered. Some wore T-shirts reading "Tomcats Forever" and a banner proclaimed, "Last Fly-In, Baby!"

"We're putting the premier fighter to sleep," said pilot Lt. Jon Jeck, 32, as he held his 3-year-old son Collin. "It's a staple of Americana."

The Navy plans to replace the F-14, a two-seat fighter with moveable swept-back wings, with the F/A-18 Super Hornets.

The F-14 entered service in the early 1970s to defend aircraft carriers from Soviet bombers carrying long-range cruise missiles.

"If you want to think about airplanes that have defined the air age, this would have to be on the short list," military analyst John Pike said.
After the Cold War, the Navy became less concerned about defending carrier groups and transformed the F-14 into a bomb-dropping fighter jet, said Pike, director of GlobalSecurity.org, an Alexandria research center on security issues.

"But it was not designed as a bomb hauler," Pike said. "They would rather have a new plane ... than try to teach an old cat new tricks."

The F-14 squadrons that returned Friday were from the aircraft carrier USS Theodore Roosevelt, which has been on a six-month deployment for the Iraq war. The Roosevelt was to return Saturday to nearby Norfolk Naval Station.

Have you read the article on few dozens F-22 deployed to 27th Squadron , being TOTALLY ready-to-actions by October this year? I really wonder how long would it take for Navy to get planes of 5th generations now. F-14 served a lot so, it's a proudful retirement

The F-14 served the Navy very well...

There's something to be said for longevity and the F14 had that...

Dam this sucks! I have always thought that the F-14 was the only Navy plane that could kick your ass all over the place and still look good. The new variations of the Hornets seem kind of pointless. Redesign 1 plane to take the place of 3 or 4 other planes? Even though the new Hornets may do their job well, you just cant replace the kind of impact the Tomcat has had on the Navy and the world.

Its just kind of hard to think that their final resting place is a scrap yard. Hopefully someone with lots of $$$ will buy a few and keep them goin like they do with old WWII planes.

One thing I cant wait for though is to see what the Air Force does with all of their F-15's and F-16's since they are supposedly being replaced by the F-22. I wonder if they will be turned into scrap too or if they will be put in museums

This does suck. The Tomcats are perhaps the best fighter in the Navy. They can take a real beating and keep on flying. I've never liked the Hornets compared to the Tomcats.

Man, this makes me feel old. I remember when they were introduced to the Navy. My friend's dad was a Corsair pilot (jet version) on the Enterprise durring Vietnam. I remember him coming home all excited about the new F-14.

Heck, I remember when they used to paint them with white undersides and colorful tail markings. Great plane for it's time.

It's just that between the F-18, which is just a better all around plane and the new JSF it's days were numbered. They were just to expensive to keep in the air. I'm still heartbroken about the SR-71 being mothballed.

Oh well, there's still "Top Gun" and "Final Countdown" on DVD.

Please, enlighten me. If you've got any facts, I'd really like to be convinced. Tell me what makes the F-14 a "flying tank." When you're done, I'll tell you why the Navy is retiring it early. Deal?
