    Default job offer!!!

hey guys, looking for some job advice...

i'm 99% certain i'm about to get an offer from a tier II automotive company. the interview process has been thorough (i had my fourth yesterday). the job is for a corporate quality manager. it's a smaller, privately owned, family oriented company. as for my opinion, i'm completely sold on the company. i have zero concerns about that part. here's my problem in a nutshell:

i'm not sure i can do the job.

i even openly told them this last night in the fourth interview (i've gotten to a point where i'm comfortable speaking candidly with them...it's a fourth interview, so the relationship is pretty solid). i was told that they understand my hesitation and concern but that the interview process has been stellar and that all the folks i'd met with a very high on me.

i'm wondering if this is just job-changing jitters or if i should be genuinely concerned.

anyone else experience a similar situation?

    thanks,

    jay

I think you just have the jitters. There's ALWAYS that learning-curve period of a few weeks to a couple months before you'll start to feel comfortable doing your job, even if you've been in the field for many years...or at least that's how I have been every time I've started a new job. Exactly what were you doing at your current / previous job and what are they wanting from you at the possible new one? I find it hard to believe that they'd hire you if they didn't feel like you could do the job...

this new position has five engineers reporting directly to me. right now, i only have indirect reports. also, this position requires ts-16949 experience, which mine is average at best. i've been very clear with them on both of these though.

thanks for the feedback...it helps tremendously. you just led me to answer a question i haden't thought of.

Fake it till you make it. The less you know the better. Weathered veterans are high maintenance. That's why they want you; fresh, dumb and green. They can train you the way they want to without you argueing about that's not how you did it before. Trust this advice.

ah yes the old sink or swim principle... i have a relative that got me a interview with comcast for a job I had no business interviewing for. The manager just wanted someone he liked and could talk about, get this, cheesesteaks to. This is why your cable bill is as high as it is. I respectfully turned down the interview and the guarenteed job that came with it. I am holding out to be the new lead, ah never mind....

Agree with all of the above and if you feel you've been candid and honest with them, and they with you, then you are going to have to allow an element of trust in THEM in their decision to hire you. Trust that they see in you what it is that they are looking for, whether you're up on all the fine details or not.

I agree 100%. I have recently pulled this off. Our VP left the company so we all got bumped up a notch and they tossed me roughly a 30k raise BUT a whole lot more responsibility. I was in WAAAAY over my head but I played it cool, asked a few trustworthy people A LOT of questions and now I am sailing along!
Just roll with it. They obviously see something in you. Good luck!

There you go. My Dad was asked years ago if he knew how to run heavy equipment, to which he replied "Sure". Then, very soon after, they asked him to run one of the cranes. He told them he wasn't familiar with that particular model, so one of the guys showed him how to run it, and it was a cakewalk from there on out. I know this may sound biased, since it is my Dad I'm talking about, but he is the best crane operator I've ever been around. Therefore, according to my logic anyway, you have the potential to become the best Quality Manager around.

    Good Luck!

    Use the 90 Day Rule....

First 30 days of your new job:
Observe the way things are being done by others. Let people know you do not want to influence anything they are doing, you are observing the new culture.

    Second 30 days:
Ask lots of questions on why people are doing the things they do. More observation and corporate culture consumption.

    Third 90 days:
Now you roll out your plan on how things should be done with your "vast" experience. People will then feel you have listened to their views, taking their sides into consideration, just before you implement your way of doing business.

Gives both sides time to adjust, especially you, if you are concerned about your new position. Your new employees will jump all over the opportunity to impress the new boss right after he asks "How would you handle this situation".

    Good Luck

I went through the same thing about the job I have now. I was worried I could not do it, but everything has worked out great.

Look at it this way, they know what they are doing they are not going to hire someone that can't do the job. Trust me you will fit in in no time.

I wouldn't worry much about, just go through the first few shifts and you'll be fin e, it always takes time to learn a new job, your attitude and approach are everything.
