Man, the sad thing is that the Army is out of control with it's ribbons. Example:

Durring Desert Storm, the 7thID(L)'s combat brigades were stuck at Fort Ord, CA, while their midcal and chemical units deployed their shoot & looters were left with their happy-socks to play pocket-pool.

No worries though, the brave men of the 7thID(L) were awarded.....the "Coastal Defense Ribbon". Had Saddam moved on San Francisco they would have fucked his shit up.

They should also have a ribbon denoting how much you payed to bribe your 1st SGT for your E.I.B.

My brother deployed to Saudi for Desert Shield/Storm, for the first three months the Air Force had him at a five-star hotel in Rhiyad, steak & lobster for dinner every night. Then, after the SCUD strikes, they moved them out into a subdivision in the desert. These were brand new houses that had never been used. They had been built for the Beduins, turns out Beduins preffer to sleep in tents. Anyway, because of all the goodwill packages that were sent durring that war, my brother had a fridge (full stocked with Pepsi), microwave, bigsreen T.V., a box of VHS movies, magazines and all kinds of stuff he never got to use (he gave me his "Care Package" from Oliver North).
My brother also had a phone, so we figured out when to call him up. It was so wierd to pick up the phone and ask him how the war was going.

That story is even funnier after I saw "Jarhead" and how the Marines rotted out in the desert with the Army.

Everyone who graduates from Basic in the Air Force gets a ribbon for graduating. It's ridiculous, but it probably has something to do with teaching the proper display of them on the uniform. I had three of the things before I got to tech school, having been in the service all of seven weeks. Basic, National Defense Service (another ribbon that everybody in the service from shortly before DS until late '95 got), and Expert Marksmanship. I think I ended up with a measly two more after four years, Good Conduct and a Presidential Unit Citation.

Oh, and speaking of deployments. One of our guys was TDY to Saudi for a bit. His days consisted of delivering a weather briefing to the brass each morning, playing Quake (or maybe Doom) on the network with the other guys, then spending the afternoons playing volleyball or rollerblading. They couldn't leave the base, but all in all it wasn't what you'd call rough.

For two years, I tried to get picked for a TDY to the south of France. That would have been a nice, nice vacation.

Temporary duty. You get detached from your unit to go form a unit with other TDY'ers, for between 3 and 6 months usually.
