Default Boy, 12, Sticks Gum on $1.5M Painting

    LOL...classic!

    http://news.yahoo.com/s/ap/20060301/.../gummed_up_art

DETROIT - A 12-year-old visitor to the Detroit Institute of Arts stuck a wad of gum to a $1.5 million painting, leaving a stain the size of a quarter, officials say.

The boy was part of a school group from Holly that visited the museum on Friday, officials say. They say he took a piece of Wrigley's Extra Polar Ice gum out of his mouth and stuck it on Helen Frankenthaler's "The Bay," an abstract painting from 1963.

The museum acquired the work in 1965 and says it is worth about $1.5 million.

The gum stuck to the painting's lower left corner and did not adhere to the fiber of the canvas, officials told the Detroit Free Press. But it left a chemical residue about the size of a quarter, said Becky Hart, assistant curator of contemporary art.

The museum's conservation department is researching the chemicals in the gum to decide which solvent to use to clean it. The museum hopes to make the repair in two weeks and will keep "The Bay" on display in the meantime, she said.

"Our expectation is that the painting is going to be fine," Hart said.

Holly Academy director Julie Kildee said the boy had been suspended from the charter school and says his parents also have disciplined him.

"Even though we give very strict guidelines on proper behavior and we hold students to high standards, he is only 12 and I don't think he understood the ramifications of what he did before it happened, but he certainly understands the severity of it now," said Kildee

So, he's a 12 year old dumbass. He understood what he was doing, unless kids today are incredibly stupid compared to when I was 12. Which wouldn't surprise me.

Oh I think he understood plenty about what he was doing. Probably why he did it.

    Kids. Gotta love 'em.

I saw this story on CNN earlier today. I guess no one else here actually saw the painting he did this to...a COMPLETE PIECE OF CRAP! The fact its worth $1.5 mil boggles my mind. Sure he shouldn't have done it and it was pretty damn stupid, but I could care less about that painting. It shows a lack of respect and he should be punished somewhat harshly, but I think there's too big a deal being made of this.

The painting sucks. They should hire the kid as a critic.

Yeah expensive crap is usually kinda out there anyways. I agree.

The things people put a dollar value on is amazing/stupid, to say the least.

Course I'd probably feel different if I were nice and wealthy enough to only have crap like that to worry about.

Ah, yes - but its not about the painting, its all about the artist

The parents should be stuck with whatever bill is accrued for the damage to be repaired. Then the kid can get rippin' on delivering those newspapers until he pays the parents back.

I disagree w/that Scum. I mean, maybe if I knew the kid it'd be a little different, but nothing has been said to suggest the parents are at fault at all. We all did our share of stupid things as kids, and at least in my case I can't attribute anything dumb that I did to bad parenting. Every stupid decision I made was by no fault but my own. Something should be done directly to the kid for what he did, having mommy and daddy clean up his mess won't do anything to him, regardless of whether or not they make him pay them back, IMO. Like I said, we all did stupid things as kids, he just happened to do something stupid to a $1.5mil piece of "art." Also, I saw the people from the art gallery on tv say they only paid a few grand for that painting just a couple yrs ago, and now they say its worth $1.5mil, if that makes any sense at all.

Oh, I'm sure the price tag for repairs couldn't be anymore than a grand. And yeah, we did stupid things as kids. This certainly qualifies as stupid. But many of us (sadly not all) learned from that stupidity, come hell or high water. I had to mow my share of lawns as repayment for some stuff......this kid should too.

Hey, guess what? If you're at a museum, YOU DON'T STICK YOUR GUM TO THE ART! "He's only 12" is a bullshit answer. My six-year-old daughter would know better! I think most four-year-olds would know better! But 12? Bullshit.

Whether or not you liked it is totally irrelevant. YOU JUST DON'T DO THAT. He's "only" twelve. Give me a fucking break.
