Default David Lee Roth Ratings - Bottoms Up!

David Hinckley of The New York Daily News has issued the following report:

In the year's least surprising radio development, morning host David Lee Roth's early ratings at WFNY (92.3 FM) have taken a steep drop from the heights of his predecessor, Howard Stern.

WFNY's parent CBS says this is a valley it expected to enter while it rebuilds former Stern slots and stations, though some people in radio warn that it could signal a more serious problem.

It's also unclear where displaced Stern listeners are going.

Arbitrend ratings released yesterday show that in January, Roth's first month, WFNY's morning share among its target audience of 18- to 34-year-olds fell from 13.8% to 1.3%.

Shares in other age groups dropped less drastically, and single-month numbers in radio, where ratings are done in three-month clusters, can show wide fluctuations. So CBS says it's not worried.

"Everyone knew there would be a drop," said Rob Barnett, president of programming at CBS Radio. "We're starting a new radio station, introducing new personalities people are discovering every day, in a format that's been very successful for us in other markets.

"This is just the beginning for this station and these hosts. We've said all along it's an 18- to 24-month process and we would never judge any show by one 30-day [ratings report]."

I don't think it was a coincidence he went on vacation the week the ratings came out.

And yes, get Sirius....even if you aren't a Stern fan....there's another 120+ channels.

Did anyone see the article about CBS suing Stern??? I just read it but couldn't post it here. A lot of allegations are being made against poor Howie.

I just found it a little curious what with the Diamond One's abrupt vacay, now this.

    Something stinks in radio city.

Believe it or not, Adam Corolla's ratings are even worse, as are the ratings for the guys who replaced Stern in the Midwest.

The moral of the story--Howard is still the king.

As said above, Sirius is money well spent. For less than $13.00 a month, you get a boatload of entertainment and a bare minimum of advertising.

I don't drop too many F-bombs...but Fuckin' A......CBS is pissed.
Actually I think most of us are Dave, Sam, and Mike fans. There's just a small group of people who have strange allegiances and like to get into petty pissing contests that I can't believe everyone on this site isn't bored of. - Brett

Fuck CBS! If they were that unhappy and disgruntled, why didn't they FIRE Howard Stern before his contract was up? Why didn't they edit his morning show to beep out the word Sirius everytime it was said? They didn't do anything about it when Howard was there because HE was producing outstanding ratings (as was the norm.) With these ratings, they were pocketing huge amounts of money. Because of this, they decided to go along for the ride in order to keep the money flowing. Now that he's gone, both the ratings and the money have dried up and now they're crying like BITCHES!

Someone give me a hanky. BOO HOO!

It's Official, David Lee Roth Sucks As A Radio Host
    by Jack Ryan
    Feb 28, 2006

It's no wonder Diamond Dave has been trying to get back with his former band mates, he's been dreading the realease of the radio's rating numbers.
In what can easily be called the year's least surprising radio development, Roth's early ratings at WFNY (92.3 FM) have fell-off the radar, according to the New York Daily News.

WFNY's parent CBS spins away saying that it's a valley it expected to enter while it rebuilds former Stern slots and stations, though many in radio have warned that it could signal a much more serious problem.

What the rating do not say is where the displaced Stern listeners are going.

According to the New York Daily News, Arbitrend ratings released yesterday show that in January, Roth's first month, WFNY's morning share among its target audience of 18- to 34-year-olds fell from 13.8% to 1.3%.

"Everyone knew there would be a drop," said Rob Barnett, president of programming at CBS Radio. "We're starting a new radio station, introducing new personalities people are discovering every day, in a format that's been very successful for us in other markets ... This is just the beginning for this station and these hosts. We've said all along it's an 18- to 24-month process and we would never judge any show by one 30-day [ratings report]."

The Daily News cites Editor Michael Harrison of the trade magazine Talkers with saying that it is too early to make any final assessment, but indicated that Roth's task is very difficult.

"Replacing Stern on the radio is like replacing John Lennon in the Beatles," Harrison said. "And it's even harder because Roth has no radio experience. The company went for celebrity ... Can he succeed? It will be very difficult. He has to listen to people who'll make him better."

The radio newcomer has gotten abysmal reviews since his freewheeling, stream-of-consciousness-heavy show debuted.

I have to admit, I'm a Dave fan.. Always have been but the show is completely un-listenable. Roth is great when he can be the clown and not hold down the fort. He seems totally lost in his new surroundings and it isn't hard to see why a return to his former glory would appeal to him.

tPC would like to suggest the following replacement options: Alice Cooper or Danny Bonaduce
