    Default Ed played on BlackSabbath-CD?!?!?!?!?

    Straight from the melodicrock-message board:

"According to legend, Eddie Van Halen & Tony Iommi were interested in working together. As a team, Eddie & Tony came up with a riff that eventually became the one for "Evil Eye". Months later, when principal recording was happening for Cross Purposes, Eddie Van Halen was supposed to come down to the studio and & record either the opening or second lead solo for the song as a guest musician (like the guitar solo Brian May did for "When Death Calls" off of 1989's Headless Cross album). However, as it's always been noted, scheduling conflicts came about for Eddie Van Halen and he couldn't come down to the studio to do the solo, and Iommi ended up doing both of them. But as far as we all Sabbath experts have known, Eddie did come up with part of the idea for the riff with Tony and received a special thank you in the liner notes of the album, but never played or got a song writing credit for the song.

    However......

Because of this new tell-all book Black Sabbath-Never Say Die, someone brought to my attention this point brought within its pages:

".....according to the book, Eddie Van Halen did go into the studio! Tony Martin and Geoff Nicholls both say he was there. Tony Iommi picked him up from the Birmingham NEC in his car and took him to the studio. When Tony Martin got there EVH was there-playing guitar! Martin says he played on the track, Nicholls says something about leaving it a mystery. Probably a legal thing just like Tony Iommi and Ozzy Osbourne not being credited on the Quartz album that is featured earlier in the book...."

    Huh, did I miss something?

Never heard of this one before, so I play it safe and post this in the rumor section.

I knew Ed co-wrote Evil Eye even though he's not credited on the album, however I'd never heard of him actually playing on it until the article posted above...
“And what we have at our fingertips is arguably one of the greatest high tenor voices ever – that was in Michael Anthony. In our tiny little corner of the universe, that voice is as identifiable as the high voice in Earth, Wind & Fire, as identifiable as the high voice in the Beach Boys. Van Halen is an indelicate house blend of both – that’s intentionally. So I would always look forward to that reunion.” - David Lee Roth

Another Iommi story for you: whilst in England on the 1995 Balance tour (with Bon Jovi), Iommi contacts Edward and asks him to come & jam. Disheartened, Edward tells him that all of his guitars are on their way to the next gig. However, Ed then asks Tony if there is a guitar shop nearby, remembering that all of his Peavey guitars are digital copies of one of his favourite necks - ie. They all have the same "worn in" feel when first played. Ed duly borrows a guitar from the shop, jams with Iommi and his band, and returns the guitar the next day signed "Eddie Van Halen".

I almost bought the album for the sole reason Eddie was on it, but Tony Martin on vocals resulted in my decision to spend my money on beer instead.

This is right (Ed talks about it on the MTV Europe Headbangers Ball from Holland when Balance was just released and they did the secret gigs here) only it was the Music Man not the Wolfgang and it was the RHRN tour.

That's cool, but the coolest thing about this thread is the thought of the
drunken Koolaid pitcher busting throught the wall, stumbling around and
    spilling his shit everywhere.

    "Oh Yeah!"
