The song is about the disenfranchised who get mixed up in the wrong crowd... selling drugs, etc, to make an easy living and no one can touch them, not even the IRS. The song is saying that the dream is over because the dream is basically shit.

I remember the Edmonton AB concert back in Nov '91. Before the song started, Sammy was saying something like, "Down south, they have to change the way things are done or else there's no going back. Because the dream they're dreaming, the American dream, doesn't exist." It was quasi Anti-American, but hey, he was catering to a Canadian crowd.
Homer: No one snuggles with Max Power. Just strap on and feel the Gs!

American Coast Guard: Back off Canadians we got them.
Canadian Coast Guard: You back off hosers, they are in Canadian waters, eh.
American Coast Guard: Beat it you puck smacking maple suckers!
Canadian Coast Guard: Take a hike you Shatner stealing Mexico touchers!

Bart: Who the hell is this?
Jack Bauer: I’m Jack Bauer, who the hell is this?
Bart: Me, er… I’m Ahmed Adudi
Jack: Chloe, get me all you can on Ahmed Adudi… Does anyone there know Ahmed Adudi?
Chloe O’Brien: Ahmed Adudi; wealthy Saudi financier… Disappeared into Afghanistan in the late 90s…
    Jack: … Really?
Chloe (ironically): No Jack it’s a joke name, you’re being set up.
    Jack: DAMMIT!

I agree with what you are saying...though in an interview that I heard about the song, Sam says he was talking about how people think the American Dream is still out there, and that it doesn't exist the way our forefathers knew it to exist. Big corporations don't trickle down their profits the way they are supposed to, etc.

I've heard before that Sam can lean right in speaking about economic issues. This doesn't sound right-leaning...I think Sam, as well as some other Regan Republicans like myself are upset at the Enrons in the world (though Enron didn't come to light when Sam wrote these lyrics)...When the Republicans give tax breaks to the "rich" as leftists love to say, the theory is that these big corporations are supposed to hire more, produce more, pay more, etc. When the top exec's at these companies get tax breaks, show huge profits and still lay off thousands, it kind of stings the righty's right where it hurts. If you are a true believer in Reaganomics or trickle-down theory, it's upsetting when assholes like the chiefs at Enron really fuck up a good idea.

Does that answer your question, Santista9?

But since this is a song forum, this song rocks out!

Yeah, I like this tune. The guitar got that "wall of sound". And the drum part fits so well... . Good to listen while driving.

I remember it being on a countdown on the old z-rock, just about everything off of fuck was released to rock radio...I don't know if that qualifies as a single or not. Very cool song.
