Default What have I done?!? (Little League)

I have three boys - 14, 9 & 6 - and they are all now signed up to play Little League baseball. Now everybody knows I'm a big baseball fan, so that's a good thing, but I had hoped that the league would be able to put the 9 year old (who has only one season of soccer a few years ago under his belt) and the 6 year old (league age 7) on the same rookie team, and they told me they would do this, but when coaches started calling, the 9 year old ended up on a minor league team and the league director told me that this was because he felt the other leagues we'll be playing against (our leagues fields are torn up while a school is being built so they plan to have a lot of interleaguing) would cry foul at the 9 year old being in rookie ball. So now I've got three boys on three different teams, with probably two practices and or games a week from now until the end of March. The rookie league probably isn't even going to be able to practice or play games on their home field all season (or at least the spring season), so I'm going to be running like a dog! My wife travels most of the time, so she won't be around to do any schlepping, either. I'm just hoping when the game schedules come out that miraculously there's no overlap. Oh, and to top it all off, my six year old, my baby, Florida born and bred, is on a team called the Yankees! Argggghhh!!! Hello, Lowell Spinners... I talked to the coach at length the other night when he called - he's a New Yorker, a Yankee fan and besides, the hispanics wouldn't go for the change (what, do they think "Yankee go home" is something the third base coach yells?) - but he seems pretty cool and I'm looking forward to him working with my son. Just have to tell my son to keep a lid on all the things he hears me say about the Yankees around the house (the coach knows I'm from New England already, though). The middle kid is delighted as he thinks the Yankees are great, though he can't name a single player (because his Mom's from New York and she likes the Yankees, though she couldn't name a single player either). Ah, wish me luck!

Good luck billy. You'll be running yourself ragged for a while, but I can't think of anyone else better suited. You know your baseball, bro!

    Good luck Billy.

I myself have 2 boys in Little League which begins in early April. I am the manager of my oldest boys' team. Guess which team we are? That's right!

    Yankees!

My wife unlike yours doesn't travel because of her job so she is VERY involved. She's an assistant coach for the younger sons' team.

Can't wait for Little League and MLB to get going?

Are you into this WBC stuff?

I'm taking a wait-and-see attitude. I think it's a good concept - timing sucks, but we'll see how the execution goes. Be interesting to see the final rosters. Go USA!

As for Little League, I've been watching the coaches to see how they run their practices. We were at the park almost all day on Saturday as the 14 year old had practice at 10A and the 9 year old had practice at 1. Both 2 hour practices! The 6 year old gets his first practice at 530P tomorrow and the 14 year old has one at 630P. I'd love to coach, but unless they need a coach to show 'em what not to do, I'm kind of on the shelf! Shoot, the 6 year old almost beat me in one sprint on Sunday, then did beat me when I couldn't complete the second!

Have fun and enjoy the time you have with them. Plus, it's gotta be nice to be practicing now. Here in Pa we're waiting for it maybe to hit 50 tomorrow. Still have snow here. I'm coaching my daughters Soccer team this spring. Hey Bill, it's cool you take an interest in your kids . I have a friend like that and he don't know much about BBall but he's there for his kids. I admire that.

Everything's going okay so far, though obviously I haven't been able to see every inning of every game. My six-year old had to miss a practice the other night as my oldest son had a game on the other side of town, and I didn't have any options for the six-year old to get to his practice. The oldest missed a game while we were in California. I think we've made everything else, though! Saturday the oldest son's team played against a Maitland squad which included several members of the Little League World Series team from last year, including Dante Bichette, Jr. Dante might not come back to our side of town as they scored some runs off him (I think he only pitched one inning) and he also got hit by a pitch! My son's team won the game! It was their first win of the season (they got their first tie on Thursday night) in their sixth game. The younger two are having fun, not sure about the oldest as he usually only gets in the last two innings and hasn't gotten a hit yet and I don't think he's recorded an out in the field yet, either. I wish he'd started playing when he was younger... My middle son had a ball hit past him the other night and he didn't flinch from his position while the ball was still rolling towards the fence. It was 8:50P on a school night and it was an inning that shouldn't have been played! Other than that, he's shown a lot of improvement since the beginning, and he and his younger brother have shown the ability to hit the ball.

Billy (and anyone else who'd like to respond):

How's the Little League season going?

My youngest is having a blast and my oldest who's team I manage is 5-5. My son hit a 2 run double to put us in the lead for good the other night.

Due to a scheduling quirk. No baseball for us this weekend.

My oldest is being sucked back to soccer

The middle is in la-la land but still claims it's what he wants to do

The youngest seems to be having a good time

The seasons are winding down - youngest has a rookie tournament starting on the 19th, I think the oldest will be in a tournament as well, just haven't gotten confirmation or details.

Rain is killing our season around here... http://brooklynlittleleague.net
We were able to sneak in a Coach Pitch game this morning before it started to rain again... Having not learned how to say no with our local youth hockey league, (I'm VP, Treasurer, Registrar and Learn-to-Skate Director) when I was asked to be an Asst Coach, of course I said yes and I know shit about baseball... Of course they didn't have a website, so I jumped into that too... <LOL> We have 11 players (ages 7-8) on our team and a few of them are non-stop spaz-city... I can't imagine having three boys on three different teams, when one is keeping me busy enough...
