Default When you think of Ed at his best, what era do you think of?

Was wondering what other people consider to be their favorite Ed? I've broken them down into different era's:

    1. VH1 thru WACF Tours - Early Ed. Young, skinny, scraggly, and just a pure animal that took everyone by surprise.

    2. Fair Warning Tour - Based soley on the Unchained, STIL, and HAIL videos he appeared to be the epitome of cool on stage.

    3. Diver Down thru 1984 Tours - Solidified the red/white/black trademark image, the yellow and black leopard jacket and pants (thankfully, he never wore them together!)....had the whole MTV thing going on. Totally became a household name at this point.

    4. 5150 Tour - The pink balloon pants and tank top. Whole new sound out of the guitar.

    5. OU812 thru FUCK tour - Back to dressing in jeans and t-shirts, retired the 5150 strat style for the new Wolfgangs. A completely different Ed from years before.

    6. Balance Tour - Short hair.

    7. 1996 thru now.

When I think of Eddie at his best, it's really the Diver Down through 1984 period. Especially 1984. I was a sophomore in High School and Van Halen ruled MTV and the music world. The Panama and Hot For Teacher videos just sum it all up for me. I was at the peak of my Van Halen obsession and just worshipped everything Ed did.

VH with Dave ('78-'84) - The best years....the "real" VH.
VH with Sam ('86-'96) - Incredible era....."We have renamed this town 'New Halen!'.
VH with Gary ('98) - Fucking disaster. WTF was that??
VH with Wolf/Dave ('12-'15) - Amazing comeback. Smokin' album and tours.

Mine would be the balance era - it was during that time that I first got to see them live.

I gotta agree with Emm on this one...

That was the time I really got into VH, so that probably has something to do with it...

Fair Warning - Diver Down, that's when I saw him too.

I'm good with anything from Ed though....

I like Eddie in every era. He is a real musician. Why would he shit on his legacy to think of himself as an "era musician". Yeah, his tone changed because he chose to change it. But, why should anyone think differently about his guitar playing as "era's"?
I particularly like: Atomic Punk, I'm the One, Somebody Get Me a Doctor, DOA, Romeo Delight, Unchained, One Foot Out the Door, Full Bug,Where Have all the Good Times Gone, Drop Dead Legs, Girl Gone Bad, 5150, Best of Both Worlds, Sucka In A Three Piece, Black and Blue, Poundcake, The Dream is Over, Seventh Seal, DTMWLCD, Baluchitheruim, All of the Best of new tunes Vol. one, Fire in the Hole, From Afar, and the 3 from the BOBW's best of. Eddie is not an era.

But if I were to pick one: All of 'em.
    Just go for it!

I think you're taking it a little too literal. We all love Ed in every era. I was just watching RHRN and he was rockin'. But there's gotta be a particular time period or tour where you thought he looked pretty fucking cool, or sounded especially good, or whatever. No?

Ed's always the man, but as far as live performances I've been present for, I'd have to go with Diver tour at the GW forum in LA, and the FUCK tour at the PA in Costa Mesa.

Eddie's best live performance is 5150 from the 5150 tour and, the live version of Ice Cream Man during the Diver Down tour when he played the entire song.(no Dave acoustic, just Eddie.) Now that was a grooving feel good brown sound aura.
    Just go for it!

Probably in 98-00 during the VHIII tour. Minus Gary. Duh.

I just got done watching a VH boot of a 2004 show. What a shitty player Ed was two years ago. Pathetic.

That's very hard....I'd say the Balance tour for Ed's style: work shirt, ripped jeans plus he looked real healthy.
And purely for his sound and absolute mastering of his guitar playing, the III tour.

See, I want to say that every time too, but fact is, I only remember four things clearly from my 'Warning show: On Fire, So This is Love, Ed's solo, and me, being so young and way overwhelmed at my first arena rock show.
