Default Who is the smarter animal? Cats or Dogs?

Does anyone have an opinion on this? Or is there any facts concerning the subject?

I don't mind either animal nor do I have either. I don't want this to be a pissing contest (pardon the pun).

I'm going to guess that cats by nature are smarter than dogs.

I think it depends on the specific animal. Some dogs are dumb and some smart, same goes for cats.

I would say dogs, since you can teach them to sit, roll over whatever. And cats don't do that....at least none i've had. You can say a dogs name and they'll look at you, cats seem to act like they dont care if you live or die.

Dogs. My dog recognizes words that I say - "biscuit", "outdoors", "park", etc. If cats recognize what you are saying to them, they sure don't show it. Also, no one ever made a tv series where Fluffy saved Timmy from a well because IT COULD NEVER HAPPEN!

I've never been a cat person, so I wont pass any comment there, I just don't know

I have seen my dogs do some pretty clever things. Probably the thing that always comes to mid was this:

I saw my dogs (fox terriers) chase a small lizard under a brick - The couldnt move the brick though to get it out from underneat. The brick was sitting in a garden made up of river stones

So one of my dogs dug out all the river stones from out under one edge of the brick, then was able to pull the brick towards her, tipping its edge into the little gully she'd created, and flipping it up enough for the other dog to grab the lizard from underneath

Thought that was pretty impressive. Problem solving or just a freak series of events? I dunno.

Killed it by ........ rolling on it repeatedly.

Which kinda counteracts any 'smart points' they built up by rolling the brick. lol.

So while your two dogs murdered a poor innocent lizard you just stood by with your beer and allowed it to happen.

    True.

But, how about if we look at it this way:

Cats can survive for days w/o interacting with a human. They have their litter box and they hang around the house and are cuntent. An outdoor cat hides under cars in the heat and can hunt down birds, etc...

I mean a dog is the only animal I can think of off the top of my head that would chase a stick if you threw it. Does that make dogs smarter than all animals? If you really sit and think about it that might prove that dogs are stupid.

Not picking sides just an observation.

Again, just asking has any studies been done on this?

Speaking as a dude who cares for over a dozen felines and eight hounds of varying breeds and temperments, the quick answer is: It depends.

Cats have superior hunting instincts, faster reaction times, and certainly are capable of forethought and intent.

Dogs form more significant emotional bonds and have evolved to adapt quicker to positive and negative reinforcement, know the strength of numbers, succumb to pack mentality where allowed, yet perform amazing feats of seemingly abstract altruitistic behaviors (such as waking owners upon discovery of fire, rescuing children from rivers, etc). Whether cats care about the latter in lesser or greater degrees, or whether they're physically incapable of similar feats, is a matter of interpretation.

One of my cats, an orange tabby, readily fetches and returns balls, comes when called by name, rides on my shoulder without digging claws into my carotid artery, and roughhouses playfully with a bruiser Dobie several times his size. Another cat seems so lazy, fat, and stupid, all she'll do is eat, shit, sleep, and get laid. (ah, there but for the grace of God go we all ). I have dogs that could easily show professionally with their intelligence, breeding stock, and trick repertoire, and I also have mutts that do nothing but fart and lick their balls (again, see before ).

It really does depend on a combination of genetics and environment. But generally, cats are smarter in different ways than dogs, and vice versa.
