That was not a great performance musically speaking. The whole band had been off the road for a few months, I believe Dave had to be flown in from the Amazon, and they were pretty wasted to boot.

IMO, that is the worst concert video I've ever seen. And Dave was not average. He was TERRIBLE. The band wasn't very tight, and Dave only sang 1/2 the words. HORRIFIC SHOW! I've never understood how people can say its the greatest concert ever.

I think the band's performance was great (that is Ed, Al, and Mike). The three musicians were ripping, not missing a beat. Dave was so wasted he couldn't even keep up with the band. Dave had his moments (sang Jamie's Cryin' well) but other tunes were just sung badly. However, I did enjoy Dave's monologues. Dave definitely sounded better on the 81 Oakland show.

It was a horrible night. They say this was the greatest show ever probably because of all the attention it got. Many say this is the show that really took VH off. Performance-wise, they just were not there. Its a shame, had they done more with it, it COULD be considered the greatest concert ever. But when it comes to the Diver Down tour, ill stick with Largo.

I would say the band kicked ass but Dave was totally wasted.

Certainly Dave was not as sharp as the others, but I've heard the band much tighter before. Again though, this was a stand alone concert performed a few months after a tour had ended. It would be nearly impossible for them to have been totally locked in after so much time off.

My friend worked for Avalon Productions in L.A., they put on all the hot concerts in the 1980s. He worked backstage at the US festival. He said that Van Halen showed up around 4:00pm and went to "Talent Island", an area inside a moat where tents and trailers were set up for the bands. He said that Ed stayed inside the tent or trailer until the show, playing his guitar and drinking with Val. Dave, Al and Mike were more social and walked about, chatting with everyone, each had a bottle of Jack and they were sucking hard on them. At one point Alex was so drunk, he had wedged his head in between Mike's shoulders so he could keep standing. So with Mike following Dave and Al attached to Mike's back they had formed a warped Conga line.

My friend was worried that they wouldn't be able to play and was amazed that they made it through their set.

Not a good day for Van Halen.

Well the simulcast was all I heard of this show back in the day. I thought it was great.

I'm not one for critiquing a show performance, I'm more for the musical vibe of the band. if they're having a great time, more power to 'em. Sounds like it was a great time to me. That's the way it was anyways. It was VH excess, it's what they were known for back then.

Thanks for the visual Axxman That paints a pretty funny picture.

The US Festival is not one of Dave's better performances vocally. The rest of the band seemed pretty tight. Dave was always hit or miss vocally but that is not what Dave was/is about. Dave is attitude pure and simple and if he was hitting the right notes and words, well all the better. As Dave himself said, "I am the party".

It was a typical Vh show. You either got a smoking rock performance with high energy davbe and unreal Ed or you got a drunkfest, with high energy dave and unreal Ed..either way it was great to be in the audience at a CVH show!!
