    Default JEM555

OK, I realize that the 555 is a korean cheaper version of the famous Vai guitar. and I will probably need to replace the tremelo.

but I won a brand new one on ebay for $208.... thats pretty good isnt it????

well it could be a fake of course, but there is a jem555. you can read all about it on the ibanez site. it is the old jem jr from korea. several people own and have reviewed them at harmonycentral, sounds like replacing the tremelo makes it into a nice guitar.

they are just not offered in America any longer. Now it may be Ibanez and still be a crap guitar, but for $200 I have my fav guitar players ax (all be it a cheap knock off)

    and from jemsite

    http://www.jemsite.com/jem/spec.htm

half way down ARE the 555 specs, and they use pro edge II trems now.

paying with paypal protection, so my measly $200 is fairly safe. I just dont see the down side since I am a huge VAI fan. How bad can the guitar be?

and yes I realize that being cshipped from China means very high chance it is a faked copy. but I have found instances where people recieved verfied Ibanez products from China. $200 is not much money for me and even a fake would be cool.

    guess I will find out

thats cool if you know it might be a fake. hopefully if it is fake it is playable. I have been looking for a 555 and checking on auctions. there are some fakes coming from america now, a guy in minneapolis was selling them they look absolutely identical. i'm interested to hear how it is when you get it.

I played one about 3 years ago (actually I played it a lot since it was the only lefty in the local music store and I used to hang there all the time). It's a really nice guitar, and I don't think you will have any need to replace the trem on it, properly set up it works just as well as an original floyd.

The stock Dimarzio pickups are nice, especially compared to the shitty V7/V8 that most RG's come with. The neck is really thin like all RG types, some people like that some don't. It's well balanced on the strap, not neck heavy at all. It's basically a high output super strat guitar, and if you got one for $200 you got a deal considering they sold new for about $1000.00 a few years back. Hope it works out for you.

Is your's black or white, to my eye's the black look's a lot better then the white, though it was the white one that I used to play on. Ill put it this way, I really could care less about Steve Vai, but I thought seriously about buying it (for $800.00 out the door).

its white, and I love thin necks, I have very small hands.

I will keep everyone updated, even if its a fake, for 200, I may get something playable and a novalty item, since I am a vai fan.

Sorry to hear that. I've been getting really sick of those scam Chinese listings on Ebay. When I browse guitars these days very often there are more of these scams than genuine listings. I've emailed Ebay a couple of times on this, but they don't seem too concerned.

ebay did notify me and suggest I back out, for all I know, I may still get "some" guitar, but since I only have 45 days to file a complaint. I went ahead and did so.

I thought we could edit our own post, but I dont see the button...

    anyway

neck - 8 plays great, only complaint would be the high E string is very close to the edge of neck compared to my other guitars.

    sound - 9 sounds great

setup - 6 needed neck and tremolo adjustments.

tremolo - 2 and not because it floats, all my trms are kahler floaters, I love floaters, but this cheap Floyd is a pain in the ass. cutting off the ball end to lock, why does that end need to lock if the ball sits in nice and firm. It is very stiff and does not always return to perfect tune. my kahlers a very smooth and never go out of tune. I will probably throw on an edge pro, but that may require routing as I think this is one of those TRS things. So I want to play it a bit before I start tearing it apart.

I would say it plays like about like a $600 guitar, with good tremolo, about a $900.for $200 well worth it, even though I still think its a copy.

I would really like to play a jem7, is really worth $1500 more? why do jem players hate the 555? if it plays that much proportionaly better, it must be one hell of a guitar.

HUH: now this one had an edit button, why not my other post in this thread?
