Default The Challenger disaster was 20 years ago...

    Man times fly.

I was in 7th grade Science Class. There was a group of kids watching the launch on a tv in the school library. One of the students came to my class and let us know....

Also here are some fascinating links. This goes to some photos that show the actual crew cabin of the Shuttle after it broke apart: http://www.datamanos2.com/challenger/image3.html This is the first time that I have seen those.

Here's a link to an article that list 7 myths about the disaster: http://msnbc.msn.com/id/11031097

I remember I was a freshman in high school. I believe I heard about it either in the hallway or at gym class. I just remember that I wasn't in a regular class (ie. math, science). I do remember that we were all stunned to learn about it.

This is something that I will always remember where I was. My mom picked me up from 5th grade elementary and as we were pulling out of the parking lot the person broke in over the radio and said the shuttle had exploded. At that time I was unwrapping a pack of gum. Funny how the brain can remember those things, but I'm lucky if I can remember what I did the day before.

One of the lecture halls in the Engineering building at the University of Maryland has a plaque on the wall in memory of the Challenger disaster with the names of all the people that were killed in the accident.

I was in fourth grade when the principal made an announcement over the PA system about the Challenger.

Hard to believe that was 20 years ago already. RIP Challenger and your crew.

Same here on all counts. I remember they put a TV in the library showing it all. Seems like yesterday.

I was a freshman in algebra class when they made the announcement over the PA. The AV room was across the hall so everyone crowded around after that class let out to watch it on TV. Man 20 years goes by fast.

I was a senior in high school and was library aide first hour. I was watching it as I remember and eating breakfast and watching the tv and was like holy fuck, that didnt just happen....then the library filled up fast. Everyone was freaking out. We are planning our 20th class reunion and that was one of the "Can you believe it has been that long since..."

    Me too.

I was on a break and over at the nearbye market and one of the stock guys says "That's so sad, those poor people on the shuttle, how awful". So I asked him what was up and he told me, so I ran back to the store and back to the stockroom and turned on the radio and confirmed it. Then I told my boss and we both went across the street to the little Greek cafe where they had a T.V. and we watched it for about 20 minutes.

Later, a local news crew dropped by and asked to borrow one of my shuttle models I'd built and had on the ceiling, which was no problem. They used it on the 6 O'clock broadcast so that was cool.

It was pretty sad because the back-up teacher for that mission was from Captain Cooper school, down in Big Sur, so this mission had gotten a lot of advanced publicity.

I remember it well, I was sitting in 9th Grade English class when it came over our school PA.

I remember our teacher rolled in a TV set so we could watch the coverage.

Default A moment I'll never forget...

I was actually in 8th grade Earth Science class and we'd been talking about the mission the week before (my teacher was known to have a great love for the space program). As we entered the classroom that day, she told us that we'd be watching the footage LIVE during lift-off. So...I was in science class watching it live when it happened. I'll never forget the tears my teacher cried that day. She was deeply affected by the tragedy.

I was in the 5th grade at the time. I went to a Catholic school, so there was a satellite dish there. I remember my teacher had made a big deal about this particular mission because of it having the first teacher in space. I'll never forget the look of horror on her face as the shuttle broke apart. She was crying and seemed to be in shock for a little bit because she left the tv on (keep in mind we were only 10 and 11 years old). Like alot of other people here have said, it's funny how you remember these things. I guess it's like people who were around when JFK was shot. You remember exactly what you were doing.

I wasn't in school! I was driving around somewhere near Portsmouth, New Hampshire with my brother and we stopped in at WHEB where I frequently did volunteer work. We walked in and we asked us what we thought about the shuttle and all we could say was "what about the shuttle?" as we didn't know. Very sad. And of course, it was a big deal up there leading up to it as Christa McAuliffe was from New Hampshire. If my memory isn't shorting out, I believe the video for ZZ Top's "Changes" premiered that evening as well and that song has always made me think of the Challenger...
