Default What do you think of Detroit??

Well, Super Bowl XL is coming to Detroit, and being someone who grew up here...I was wondering how you fellow linkers feel about this city?? Let me start by saying, I am in no way here to defend or praise the city..just looking for your viewpoint. I will however let you know how I feel about the city I grew up next to. I guess the best way for me to describe this city is,

Detroit, the city, it is the main hub of this area, however, the city and its suburbs are divided, so much so that there is constant bickering back and forth between the city and its burbs'. At one time the city was a vital, empowering source for this area, however, in the past 20-30 years it has become somewhat of an embarrasment for those of us living in the area. It has, for many, many years become a city of national ridicule, and scandle...I.E...the Chief of police arrested and convicted of many crimes and sentenced to a lengthy prison term, being singled out for having so many Devil's night fires that the city made national headlines...and many others I'm sure you all have seen.

However, the suburbs of Meto Det are some of the most wonderful in the country...they offer , year round skiing, fishing, boating and some of the richest, empowered neighborhoods in the nation to live in. Oakland county for example is considered one of the richest counties in this country to reside in. The Mero area in general is an absolutely wonderfull place to grow up, raise children, and prosper.

So I raise this question to you fellow linkers, do you still think of Detroit as the murder capitol of the world, or, do you think it has made the turn for the better?? Would you bring your family here without a hesitation or would you say...hell no?? I will say this in closing.....I saw four VH concerts in '04...Cleveland,Oh, Auburn Hills, Mi....Grand Rapids, MI, and DET...I was never concerned for my saftey.....in any town but Det. I think that says a lot, but I wonder what your honest opinon is from a national perspective!!

I've only been there once, for the Bears and Lions game on Thanksgiving in '97. All I really remember was that the Silver Dome seemed to be in the middle of no where, and potholes. Lots and lots of potholes.

We have a couple of hotels in the Troy area and another one over in Livonia, so I've been there a few times in the past 10 years. Never bothers me to be downtown, but Mike's right about the damn potholes! Haven't been to Comerica yet, do hope the Tigers get a better team on the field in the near future. Obviously the source of some GREAT music in the '60s and much of the '70s - Motown, Seger, Nugent - only thing the city's given us lately is Marshall Mathers - and they can have him back!

They don't play in Pontiac (or obviously the Silverdome) anymore, but dude....the "potholes" remark has me ROTFL......it is so true.

.....and then the locals try to make up some bullsh*t excuse like, "well, we're the only state that's cold in the winter and hot in the summer, and our roads can't handle it......."

No......we're the only state dumb enough to not hire the right people to DEAL with it. I went through 3 rims two years ago. WHAT IN THE NAME OF BOCEPHUS ARE POTHOLES DOING ON THE ***EXPRESSWAY***???

I was working overtime one night a couple Januarys ago, on my way home....pitch dark....and WHAM....I literally thought my eyeballs were going to fly out of my head. Totally bent the rim. You can't dodge that sh*t when you're going 70+ and it's dark out.

As far as Detroit goes.....it will probably never turn around. Their supposed "new recovery" that's been going on for the last 4 years has been an absolute flop. There's basically a 2 or 3 block area where you're safe, and that's it. They build Ford Field. They build Comerica. Every investor and their mom (including a friend of mine) claimed they'd open a bar/entertainment/whatever, but have backed off. Then the local idiots vote for Kwame Kilpatrick and his tax-dollar paid Strippers....AGAIN. It's a hopeless, hopeless place unless the government moves in and takes over.

They did that with Flint, and while it's still a barren wasteland, at least it's financially stable. Took no time at all. That won't happen under Kwame, at least not while strippers are dying at his tax-dollar paid mansion during his tax-dollar funded party.

On top of that, Big Beaver Rd in Troy is about to explode again. I believe that both the Troy area AND Grand Rapids (which sh*ts all over Detroit) should be the twin "sports capitals" of the state. But that's me.

The west side of the state has a whole audience that is dedicated to sports as much as the "east side". Their minor league baseball teams outdraw the Tigers, their K-Wings hockey games are always sold out. It's ridiculous.

Detroit is a joke. The suburbs of Detroit are some of the nicest places to live in the country, but the same could be said of LA's suburbs, Chicago's, etc. The outer areas where all the big-timers live. You asked about Detroit. My response is: it's a barren wasteland that desperately begs for an intervention from the government. The locals won't do it with their vote. They're too busy collecting foodstamps and robbing liquor stores.

i've only been to Detroit three times (NAIAS show twice, and Comerica for the Stones show last year) so i didn't get to see a whole lot.

Comerica is a nice ballpark. it's no Jacobs Field , but a reasonable facsimilie.

we parked at Greektown Casino and rode the people mover to Cobo for the car show...downtown Detroit looks a lot like downtown Cleveland, projects in various stages of completion and empty buildings here and there. the mover is a good idea but it kind of looks out of place, like they just plopped it down where it would fit. and from what others have said, like Detroit, the "money" doesn't live in Cleveland, the money is in the 'burbs.

i did notice the roads are really bad, even compared to ours. i think Michigan allows bigger trucks on their highways than Ohio does, so that's probably a big part of it...but holy shit, even riding up there in a big ol' cushy Buick wagon is a rough ride.

would i live up there? probably not. i wouldn't even move back to Toledo.

I have never been to Detroit or any of the surrounding area's. From what I have seen and heard its shit hole. Please dont take offense to the shit hole comment, my oppinion is based on news stories and friends that have been and reported back. The Murder capital thing doesnt help, I also read a story about abanded houses, it just doesnt paint a real pretty picture.

In any big city you are going to have some nasty places and some really nice places, my general perception of Detroit is kind of nasty, run down with lots of crime. From what I have been told and seen Washington DC is nasty as well.

Once again please dont take offense to my comments.

When I think of Detroit I think of their awesome hockey team The Detroit Red Wings, and all the great players that played for them over the years like Mr. Hockey Gordie Howe, Steve Yzerman, Ted Lindsay, Terry Sawchuk etc.

I also think of General Motors, since that is where the company is founded.

I know that Alice Cooper and Ted Nugent are from Detroit.

I also think of two movies, Robocop and Beverly Hills Cop. LOL! Robocop is pretty insulting to Detroit actually.

    Default my thoughts on detroit...

    It's a Motor City Madhouse

    The Mo-Town Sound

The heartbreak story that is the American auto industry

    Bad football

    Detroit. Rock City.

The Pittsburg of the Northern Midwest

    Dazed & Confused

    Crackwhores & murder

Other than that and having never been, I would say "It's a nice place to visit,
but wouldn't wanna live there". Except for the visiting part.

    Sorry.

Hey, LA is a shithole too. But the weather's better.

Both of my parents are from Detroit, but where they grew up is a shit-hole now. My relatives live in the suburbs now - Farmington Hills (12 Mile) and Northville (8 Mile). I go back every couple of years to visit, but I can't remember the last time I've been to downtown Detroit. The UP of Michigan is a great place to go if you like the outdoors - fishing, hunting, boating, etc...
