Default New Pickups on an OLP Guitar

I have a question, I bought a OLP Axis copy without the Floyd, it's the $199 deal one. Anyhow, I've bought two new pickups for it and am installing them myself, a Tone Zone for the bridge and a Air Norton for the neck. When setting the pickup height, what effect...other than volume...does the height have as you go towards the strings? I have read in different reviews that if I move the neck one too close to the strings, the guitar will sound muddy. What is a good general rule as to what height to set it to? I had it practically flush at first, but have raised it to about 1/4-1/8" below the strings, it got louder and sounds better...what else can I do to get the most out of my new pickup? I'm getting a pretty sweet sound...especially when clean...but want to make sure I'm doing it right. The bridge one has not come in yet, but any tips on making that sound good as well? When the MM EB first came out, I had a purple see through one, this guitar plays pretty dam close to that one, I really like it for the money I spent.

PS-anyone ever seen an OLP with a non-black backside? I bought this one and the finish on the back is see through, you can see the grain, but it has the orange stain on it. I painted the cream border black, got a black volume knob and the new pickups are black....also painted in the OLP logo in black...it looks pretty tough. I keep looking, but have not seen one like this, just wondering if anyone else has seen one?

Default New Pickups on an OLP Guitar

I'm not sure you would want them...the wiring was really cheap. How long ago did you see one on Ebay...all the ones that I find have the black backing. Tell you what, it looks really cool with the black boarder, black knob and black pickups...how do I post a photo?
