    Default Steve Lukather on Eddie

I was on the Classic Rock Revisited website (classicrockrevisited.com) and there was a recent interview with Steve Lukather from Toto who has been a long time friend of Ed's. Here's his comments/update on Eddie:

"Jeb: A lot of people are worried about Ed. Is he okay?

Steve: He is fine. He went through a really rough spot. Letís face it, on top of what you may have heard about him hurting himself, he got divorced, got cancer and lost his mother all in the same year and a half period. And his band falls apart and there is all that bad vibe. It is tough on a cat. You have to give him a little slack. His body of work speaks for itself. There is still a lot of good music left in Ed. You just have to let him go through what he is going through.

Rumors are dangerous. The internet is dangerous. You start saying shit about somebody and then it morphs into this other shit. He is just a fucking man who is trying to raise his son and get his health and his mind right. It canít be easy being a guy like that. He has pressure to be absolutely brilliant every time he touches the instrument. You canít reinvent the wheel every time. He has been unfairly eaten alive. Give the guy a fucking break. Sometimes when you get older maybe you do lose a little of an edge. We are trying to bust our asses and trying to think what we are doing is valid and good. It is always going to be compared to your most famous work. Consequently, someone is going to say that it is not as good. Maybe everyone is going to say that and maybe it is true; I donít know. I canít imagine Jimi Hendrix being alive doing smooth jazz records. Who is to say that would not have happened? It is like going to see the Sex Pistols when they are 45 years old."

Seems to be right on the money!

What a stand up guy and good friend he is to defend Ed like that. I would do the same for any of my friends.

I think the key (and new) sentence here is: "He has been unfairly eaten alive"

That's a pretty strong statement. If that's the way Ed really feels, then it can explain him being a recluse for the past year.
I don't know what Luke is specifically refering to. VHIII? The tour?
I don't think EVH has received that bad of a treatment. If anything VHIII criticism was mainly directed at Gary.
And during the 2004 reunion, Ed still got loads of adulation from lots of sources. OK, one or two bad reviews here and there, but come on, even in its glory days, VH used to be lambasted by the press.

So it's still a bit mysterious to me.

Luke is an awsome dude. Not only is he a great guitarist, but a loyal friend. I feel good for Ed knowing that this guy at least will probably always be there for him. I say Steve's right. Ed should take as long as it takes to get himself together. I can wait. I'll still be here waiting for him whenever he picks the music back up. Whenever it is.

This is right on the money.

You know, sometimes I'm glad Hendrix and Rhoads are dead. They didn't live to see their fans turn on them, they had already started turning on Hendrix in 1970 because he wasn't doing his wild show anymore, he was just playing his guitar.

Had Rhoads lived, he would have stretched out into no rock music. Maybe he'd have Steve Morse's job with Deep Purple, either way all you'd read on the internet is how Randy's gone down hill, how he's only a pale version of his former self, how he shouldn't have done this or that.

    We still have Ed.

As long as he's around we will eventually get some more good stuff from him.

I sincerely hope gets through this rough patch and I am sorry his mother passed away, but let's face it, many of Ed's problems are perpetually, chronically self-inflicted. The smoking AFTER YOU HAD MOUTH CANCER! The drinking, after you were once sober, the divorce because he couldn't make the relationship work and lacks stability, I mean, how sorry am I suppose to feel for that?

Nice read, thanks for posting RDL...
ďAnd what we have at our fingertips is arguably one of the greatest high tenor voices ever Ė that was in Michael Anthony. In our tiny little corner of the universe, that voice is as identifiable as the high voice in Earth, Wind & Fire, as identifiable as the high voice in the Beach Boys. Van Halen is an indelicate house blend of both Ė thatís intentionally. So I would always look forward to that reunion.Ē - David Lee Roth

Given the numerous Ed bashings, a strong statement such as that should be stuck up on the homepage of this or any other website for all to read and remember.
Bobby Cohn: Who's going to be at Waynestock?
Wayne Campbell: Um, uh...Aerosmith & Pearl Jam!
Garth Algar: Ha ha ha ha ho!
    Bobby: Who else?
    Garth: Uh, me...and...and Wayne...
    Wayne: ...and uh...VAN HALEN!!!
Garth: Wow. Van Halen. Who else?
    Bobby: Yeah, who else?
Wayne: Uh, an old man fashioning a kayak out of a log?

As this is a thread about Lukes comments on Ed I thought I should post a part of an older Luke interview from melodicrock:

"Trying to live a life like you're still 22 years old and you're 46, 45 years old and you get depressed and shit. It's very lonely. You go from 10,000 people screaming for you to an empty hotel room and you're away from home and things happen. My doctor started putting me on anti-depressants, you get Zanex, you get tweaked. I was drinking hard liquor, way too much of it and I started to suffer.
Then I got really sick. I got hepatitis A from eating bad food somewhere in Europe. I was in Tahiti and it became full blown. My eyes were orange, my piss was orange, I was sick, I lost like 24 pounds. And I still had to work.
I was just gonnaÖI just felt like my foot was nailed to the floor and I was running around in circles. It's real easy to lose sight. People don't understand this life. They think it's all limousines, the beautiful people life and everybody wipes their ass with hundred dollar bills. That's not the case. It's hard work. And it really stresses you out. The loneliness. You go from the highest highs to the lowest lows. You can't just go back to your room after a show, read a book, go to bed. There has to be a wind down. And with the traveling on the bus all night long, interrupted sleep.
You wake up at four in the morning, you get off the bus, you go to the hotel, the hotel rooms aren't ready, you can't get any food because the restaurant's not open. Or you miss breakfast completely and then they don't have food until like dinner. You just kind of lose yourself. Some people are better at it that others.
    "

It seems that Eddie just can't handle the pressure so try to cut him some slack, okay? I'm sure he tries his best not to do all the crazy shit people claim he does. I mean, what would you do if you were in his shoes?

although lukathers statement is accurate to a large extent it doesnt excuse eddie from being a dick to his fellow bandmates and not to mention his fans on the last tour! read some of the posts from people who had the golden rings tickets in 04!!!
