Default Third Time Lucky For Van Halen

A friend of mine was looking at his Van Halen 3 cd last night and he found a review of the album that he kept in the cd case. It was reviewed by my local newspaper and would've be done around the time of release of VH3. It makes reasonable (sometimes funny) reading so I'll retype it for all your viewing pleasure:

Third Time Lucky For Van Halen

Sounding raw, rough and ready than ever before, Van Halen's third line-up (this is actually its 13th album) finds plenty of exciting new territory to explore while maintaining all of the group's essential trademarks.

It opens uncharacteristically, with a gently acoustic guitar and piano melody that has more in common with traditional folk than heavy rock - although the two instruments build to as much of a maelstrom as they can muster, before the drums kick in for a roaring start to the single
    Without You.

The song is equla parts crunching rock and spine-tingling singalong melody, things which have previously represented opposite ends of the group's musical spectrum.

It's a top-notch introduction for new vocalist Gary Cherone, formerly of the group Extreme.

He variously displays both the rasp of Van Halen's original vocalist David Lee Roth and the soaring range of his immediate predecessor Sammy Hagar and fits the band like a glove.

One I Want definitely shows '90s sensibilities in its sassy lyrics and pared-down, syncopated verses before breaking into some blistering Eddie Van Halen guitar - although he wisely goes more for fell than '80s fastness.

    The brooding mood of
From Afar again shows how Cherone's skill as a lyricist has taken the group to another level and given it a more contempary grasp, while the escalating drive of Once and acoustic strum of Josephina re-define the concept of Van Halen power ballads.

Drummer Alex Van Halen goes tribal for the thundering introduction of
Dirty Water Dog, while Year To The Day is a yearning rock epic.

For Van Halen, it sounds like a case of third time lucky.

This reviewer is like the kind of guy you'd stalk in a sports casino, placing bets on the opposite of everything he does.

No doubt, there were a few duds on "III," But I tend to agree with the points he makes about the individual songs highlighted. And sure, the production was subpar, but they went in some very different directions on this album. Whenever I pop this CD in, I find it to be very refreshing as compared to the later Hagar stuff. I just wish we could have heard some of the follow-up stuff.
