Default David Lee Roth #1 on vocals

Hi all, and happy new year.

Just found out about this board through a google. I used to be a big Van Halen fan back in the 80s, and been kind of drifting for the last few years. I always liked the band, but back then I used to listen to them all the time, especially when weight training.

Very recently I heard the songs Me Wise Magic and Can't Get This Stuff No More, and I was totally blown away to find out that it is David Lee Roth on vocals! I say this in all seriousness, listening to those songs has renewed my love of this band. Dave's vocals are simply awesome, and immediately brought back memories of the VH I remember. Jesus, I wish these guys would do a full album together. Those 2 songs are f*g awesome, not just for Roth, but Eddie's guitars and the music overall. Fr the longest time I wasn't even aware they existed, and it is so nice to hear them now. I only happened to find out reading an article that these tunes were recordings from a short lived reunion with Roth and only released on the Best of Van Halen album.

So let me ask you guys -- when exactly were these 2 songs recorded with Roth? IMO and personally for me, Roth's vocals kick ass. Always did, and always will. If Hagar thinks he can compare to Roth, no way I say. Roth has great vocal range and dynamics when he sings, an unmistakeable talent and element that defines VH in my book.

Don't get me wrong, I still like VHIII and Sammy Hagar stuff, in fact I love 5150. But listening to David Lee Roth on a couple of FRESH new tracks just reinforces that he is THE BEST of all vocalist they ever had. Roth still has it after all these years.

Roth is an album singer. That's not truly a bad thing... Some guys
come off better live and sound like fluff on albums. Steven Tyler for
one... I mean I do live Aerosmith's albums, but his vocals are 10 times
    better live than on albums.

My point is that when you talk about who is the best vocalist.. I think
it depends on what you mean.. I think Sammy sounds better live and
more fluff on album... But Dave sounds better on albums and worse live.

They were recorded back in 1996. To think that anyone in VH could record such things now is probably hopeful at best. Listen to what has been put out since 1996 by both VH and DLR, and see if you don't come to the same conclusion.

I do like Sammy's vocals too of course, but I prefer Roth. I have never seen VH live, so I'll take your word for it One particular non-VH song of HAgar's which I really like is Winner Takes It All (from the corny Stallone movie Over the Top). I heard way back that was EVH playing bass on that track.

Ahhh.. 96, ok thanks. I thought it was somewhere around there, late 90s. When I heard these songs I was really impressed with DLR's vocals after all these years. He still sounds amazing.

DLR's vocals on those tracks do sound great, but according to the stories, it was like pulling teeth getting the songs together. First it was going to be one song, then Dave said let's do another; they couldn't get another together, so it was just one again; then Dave said 'how bout the first one we tried to work on'; It was kind of the same deal with Sammy last year saying he wanted to do a whole album, but Eddie couldn't keep it together. Or so I've heard.

Well I was as happy as anybody to hear DLR with VH again.

I thought he was great live cause he had that vibe goin with the show and with the music. A live show is good when the guys don't stick to the album note for note. If I wanted a show like that, I'd save myself some dough and just listen to the albums at home.

I do love the song Me Wise Magic and of course I do love Roth songs. But there is no way to technically prove that Roth is a better singer than Hagar. Roth is a better frontman than he is singer. Hagar is a better singer than he is frontman. That is a fact. When you judge their singing, it's better to listen to live tracks rather than recorded tracks.

I prefer a singer who remembers lyrics and can sing them correctly, so I would rather listen to Hagar even though Hagar does have his flaws. Nevertheless, I still think Dave is great.

Then again, it's my opinion and you of course have yours.
    Respects.
