The Cars (Recording New Record Right Now?)

    Came across this link:

    http://www.axlmusic.com/Elliot_Easton.896.0.html

Has anyone else heard about this?

The 6th paragraph down in the article on The Cars guitarist Elliot Easton claims he is currently in the studio with them recording a new record and there will be a tour!

This is awesome if it's legit! I have been wanting to see these guys for a long time! I know it's not the same without Benny Orr, but I will take what I can get.

I have done a bunch of searching on line but can't find any more info on this.

Anyone else up for a Cars Reunion?!?!

The Cars were good in their time, but I think that without Ben they should leave the legacy to rest. But I guess since Easton's been playing with "Creedence Clearwater Revisited" he doesn't know any better than to put a band out there without a key member...

I agree with your Creedence reference. Fogerty was the band's leader.

But personally, I always considered Ric Ocasek as the leader of the Cars not Orr. Plus, I always thought Orr's and Ocasek's vocals were nearly identical. So with that said, for me a Cars reunion is a little more easily digested.

I was thinking about this not two weeks ago. With bands that sound like the Cars getting some popularity in the last few years, I think the time is right to do it again, plus no one in the band is doing ANYTHING worth talking about--performance wise that is.

I saw them on the Heartbeat City tour. Not all that impressive of a live show. You're not not missing much. You would essentially get the same effect if you listened to their CD while looking at a poster of them. They don't work the stage. They don't talk. They don't do anything other than stand there and play the song almost exactly as they recorded it. I might pick up the album, but I'm definitely not wasting money on the tour.

Klee Hee's probably right. And while Orr was not the "leader",
he was definetly integral to their sound. The same argument that's
made around here about Mike Anthony, only moreso with Orr cause
he sang a lot of their hits. But this is what old rock bands do, so
    color me ambivalent.

KleeHee hit the nail on the head about their live show. VERY boring.
I think The Hooters opened for them and they seemed more "lively"!

    New music from "The Cars"...

    Has anyone heard this yet??

I heard this song on some Boston radio station and I had figured it was from Ric Ocasek's newest solo album... BUT, when it was over the DJ said that what we heard was the newest song just released by the reformed Cars...
She went on to say that only the drummer is a part of this Cars return (and of course the deceased Orr)...

    ===========================
    from August 2005
One of the best kept secrets in the music industry this year has been the planning of an early 2006 tour by The Cars. The Boston-based band did a hugely successful arena tour in 1984. That was followed by a final North American outing in 1987 after which the group disbanded.

Lead songwriter and vocalist Ric Ocasek married supermodel Paulina Porizkova and has spent a lot of time producing other bands, including Weezer, Guided By Voices, Bad Religion and Hole, since The Cars parked their career in the '80s.

Bass player and vocalist Ben Orr was 53 when he died of pancreatic cancer in October 2000.

Guitarist Elliot Easton has filled his time with solo recordings, studio work and touring as part of various acts. Multi-instrumental keyboardist Greg Hawkes has popped up on solo Ocasek records and other projects including Letters To Cleo.

Rumors that The Cars would tour first surfaced in the spring with an Internet posting on an unofficial fan Web site. Although several industry sources have confirmed various parts of the rumor, no one directly connected to the project is talking.

The Cars are managed by Allen Kovac, who did not comment on the tour. His office said the band members had not actually sat down together and discussed a tour. Kovac also manages Mötley Crüe, which launched a hugely successful reunion tour earlier this year.

Ric Ocasek is managed by Elliot Roberts, but his office would confirm only that Ocasek will release another solo album in September and that he would not be part of any Cars tour if it happened. Further inquiries were referred to Kovac.

Now, this is where the story gets really interesting. Since Ocasek won't do the tour, Easton and Hawkes have apparently recruited an old friend to step into his shoes.

Todd Rundgren is reportedly set to sing most of the lead vocals previously handled by Ocasek and Orr. Anyone familiar with Rundgren's talents as a musical chameleon would easily understand how the Runt could make it work.

Rundgren has been out this year doing a co-headline tour with Joe Jackson. His longtime manager, Eric Gardner, had no comment on the rumors other than to say he "couldn't be responsible for the Internet rantings of some tri-polar fan."

ya cant have a CARS tour without ric ocasek. its unfortunate enough that ben orr is no longer with us, but to go on tour with neither ric nor ben would be utterly ridiculous.

Kasim Sultan will be playing bass...after shooting his mouth off about a tour the other day, he has mysteriously back pedalled, now stating no tour is currently in the works.

I dunno why this would be such a reach...how many people have ever bought a Ric Ocasek album? When was the last time the Cars released a decent album (maybe the one with "Drive" on it, a thousand years ago)?

On the other hand, Todd Rundgren knows his way around a pop tune. The band is being billed as the "New Cars", which is not false advertising.

OK, having a drummer named "Prarie Prince" does make one shrug...

It does feel awkward without Ben Orr, however.

I'll give it a chance, yet I'm not expecting the second coming, either.
